Valencia have been put on high alert following Diego Costa's request that Atletico Madrid rescind his contract.
Los Che know that, should Costa end up departing the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico may well look to Mestalla for a replacement.
Maxi Gomez has always been on the radar of Diego Simeone's side and the striker was linked to Los Rojiblancos in the summer.
However, Valencia decided they would prioritise the sales of other key players such as Dani Parejo, Francis Coquelin and Rodrigo Moreno because of their respective contract situations.
A big release clause
Valencia signed Maxi Gomez from Celta Vigo for 30 million euros in the summer of 2019, with Santi Mina and Jorge Saenz also included in the deal.
Los Che inserted a 140 million euro release clause on Gomez upon his arrival at the club but, as early as last summer, they considered selling him for much less.
At the moment, the cost of Valencia's first team squad is 30 million euros more than what Financial Fair Play (FFP) stipulates.
FFP was one of the reasons behind Geoffrey Kondogbia's sale to Atletico in November, with this transfer now putting Valencia on alert over the future of Gomez.
"I don't know if players are going to arrive, nor if they're going to leave," head coach Javi Gracia said ahead of the January transfer window.
Gomez has scored four goals in 1,146 minutes for Valencia in LaLiga Santander this season.
FFP limits
It's not yet clear whether Atletico will let Costa go, but what is fairly certain is that they will look to be active in the January window.
However, they must do so within the constraints of FFP themselves. As a result, a move for Gomez could well have to be a loan with an option to buy.
This kind of deal, though, doesn't benefit Valencia and their accounts straight away, and there's no guarantee Atletico will trigger that option to buy in the summer.

Yeah especially as his contract could be terminated, it’s not like he will be sold
