Virgil van Dijk says he has ‘no idea’ where he will be playing his football next season – and anyone who says he is close to extending his Liverpool contract is ‘lying to your face’.
There is a chance the Reds captain has now played his last Champions League game for the club after their penalty shootout heartbreak against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.
Van Dijk is out of contract in the summer and, though a new offer has been put on the table by Liverpool, the two parties are at this stage no closer in reaching an agreement for him to stay on.
Asked if he will be back next season for another crack at lifting the Champions League, the Dutchman said: ‘I have no idea. I still have no idea at the moment. Genuinely. I have no idea at the moment.
‘It is not on hold. Nothing is on hold. There’s just… I keep saying the same thing. Listen, there are 10 games to go (this season) and that is my full focus. If there is news, you guys will know it. But I don’t even know myself.
‘Everyone knows there are some conversations behind the scenes but that is about it. At the moment I don’t even know what will happen next year. If anyone says they do know, they are lying to your face.’
Liverpool are minded to stick to the same tactic they have employed all season with the three contract sagas – Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also see their deals expire in the summer. That is to remain tight-lipped and not allow the situations to play out in public.
Arne Slot has straight-batted many questions around Van Dijk’s future over the last few months but he has gone on record to say his Dutch compatriot is the best player he has ever coached, in terms of leadership and professionalism.
Because of that, Van Dijk will not allow this contractual saga to distract him from the task ahead and he admitted that he needs no extra motivation to win the Premier League and Carabao Cup in the remainder of this season.
‘There are 10 games left, not many, and there are two big prizes we can still get,’ he added. ‘We are going to give it everything. We have to feel the disappointment of this loss but from tomorrow it is about recovery. Be ready for a good one.
‘If we bring this intensity in Wembley with our fans, then I am positive. I am always positive. But I am really looking forward to being back out there.
‘We don’t need any added motivation. We have 10 games, the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, if you need any added motivation you are in the wrong business.’
His comments come after the Liverpool captain was spotted deep in conversation with two PSG chiefs after the Reds were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday.
Less than an hour after the game had finished, Van Dijk was spotted in conversation with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sporting director Luis Campos in the Anfield tunnel.
His discussions with Campos, which appeared to be cordial, came less than a week after the Dutchman clashed with the controversial Portuguese specialists at half-time of the first leg between the two teams.
Van Dijk could be heard saying, 'It's not Ligue 1 here, bro' after Campos raged at the decision by the referee not to show Ibrahima Konate a red card during the game at Parc des Princes.
On Tuesday, the Netherlands international played the full 120 minutes during a disappointing night for Slot's band, which endured a loss in a penalty shootout.
Gianluigi Donnarumma saved penalties from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, while PSG scored all four of their spot kicks as Luis Enrique's side progressed to the quarter-finals.

The beginning of the end for liverpool. Slot profited from Klopps team. We'll know if he has a ten hag in him or not
It's pathetic how yll think every comments is from opposition. I'm no fans of either. And I don't care who wins or not. Yet you can't deny my point. Slot inherited Klopps team and goos for him if he wins 🏆. But now it's time to see if he can create a team, his own team.

Actually, aside from average Liverpool, no club needs Van Dijk. He always played like a headless chicken.

lpool will win only EPL because Arteta is a stubborn fool, but they will lose the Carabao Cup. they have become too arrogant, thinking they only have to turn up and lift a trophy
