According to Sport Witness, Van Hecke told Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad that Robertson made the wrong decision at the time.
He said: "It couldn't have been worse. You know you're playing with one less man. It would have been smarter to kick the ball out then, so Van de Ven could have gotten back."
Commenting on Tottenham Hotspur's winless start to the season, despite the team's massive £300 million spending spree in the summer, Van Hecke admitted: "We expected things to be different.
