Manchester United have begun the early stages of their search to identify a first ever director of football at the club, with former goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar and Roma's iconic transfer chief Monchi in the running.
A troublesome summer and unhappy exploration into the transfer window has seen the powers that be at United reconsider the current system and put into place a move that had been suggested for some time.
United have begun sounding out candidates for the position as they begin an extensive period of assessment to fill the role which could arguably become one of the biggest appointments in the club's history.
Former Red Devils goalkeeper Van der Sar is seen as a favourable option due to his links to Old Trafford and the stellar work he has undertaken at Ajax, as report the Independent.
Roma’s transfer chief Monchi and Juventus’ Fabio Paratici are currently viewed as the most desired options for the position however, it is understood.
While Jose Mourinho has been well supported during his time at the club, United failed to add any late arrivals before the window closed.
Mourinho, contracted to 2020, was keen on a central defender but failed to get one, with the view being that none of those proposed would be a significant improvement.
A director of football would work closely with United’s already vast recruitment team, with executive vice chairman Ed Woodward and Mourinho maintaining key roles. They would ensure that a long-term plan is in place and potentially avoid last-minute scrambles for new faces.
Across Manchester, United are looking at expanding their Carrington training base following the launch of their women’s team, who are based at The Cliff, their former training ground.
Earlier this year they appointed Colette Roche as their chief operating officer and are understood to be focussing on their commercial operation, which appears to have rebounded following a relatively quiet spell.
Commercial revenue fell by £1.4m in the current financial year’s second quarter but went up 2.4 per cent in the third quarter.
Group managing director Richard Arnold, who oversaw world-record deals with US car manufacturers and shirt sponsors Chevrolet and sportswear giants adidas, has been heavily involved in the operation with a number of new partners recently announced.
Sportsmail understands that United’s shirt-sleeve deal with Kohler, announced last month, is to net the club around $100m (£78.32m), with the American homeware firm paying $20m (£15.66m) a season for five years.

considering the works he has done for Roma, I'd prefer Monchi as director for football and Zinedine Zidane as United coach.

Man United must learn to cope without the Legendary Sir Alex Fergurson whom i would have liked to occupy that position to put Some sense into Mourinho's old fashioned brain. but the old man needs his rest. We need Zidane to Succeed Jose Mourinho as well.

Man united really need a technical director. Look at what Leonardo did when he was at psg. So its time for united to have one and let woord stay behind and allow mou and technical director to handle transfers

Very good move, but may fail if Ed Woodward is retained in it. This office should be independent portfolio in alliance only with Head Coach (Mourinho) because he's the one who will eventually manage the player after signing him and not Woodward . So either of Van der Sar and Monchi fits the bill well .

When Mou speaks United listens even if they may not want it to appear that way. This appointment will be good for both club and manager and the football. The position will perfectly suit someone with good knowledge of United and someone who played at the highest level with eyes for talent and great business skills. I think Van der Sar will do a good job. Mou can not be ignored. People forget easily that United Paid Jose Mourinho not to accept any other job until LVG was sacked. Both United and Mou need to work together for the good of the club. Firing Mou and bringing in another coach will be counterproductive to the quest to reinstate United among the power houses in Europe. Give him time and back him completely.

The position of Technical Director of football is a very vital office in every top football club. With what Manchester United represents at England and Europe, the office of Director of Football should've been established long ago to compete with other top clubs in Europe. This was what the Nigerian, Michael Emenalo was at Chelsea before he relinquished his position at Chelsea's Cobham for Monaco. Emenalo was key to majority of Chelsea's smart signings and if such office is created in United, the days of late transfer market scramble will be over for good. It will also bring about competent signing as well, those shrewd piece of business Ed Woodward are incompetent at and cannot represent.

i believe that the closest option to be the sporting director of man United is edwin van der sar because he knows the club well and how their philosophy will work, while monchi and paratici are having a great relationships with their clubs and are producing success there. they will not leave unless there is a breakout between them and their owners which is impossible to happen who agree that van der sar must be the sporting director of man United?

EVDS is Ajax CEO, he can't leave for a lower position. We should go for Monchi or Fabio Paratici as DoF. Then Zidane as Manager.

Edwin van der sar is a better option. He has served the club diligently for a long time and giving him this role will trigger his zeal and make him to do more. He was the leader of the team and he has served in a leading role on some other occasions so he will be good for the Job.Manchester united need to rearrange their management and help the coach to do well with the team.
