Veteran manager Warnock: Stones can play right-back for England

Neil Warnock believes that using Stones as a makeshift right-back could help stabilize England's defense.

The Three Lions' defense has looked shaky in three of their four FIFA World Cup matches, and manager Thomas Tuchel has yet to settle on his preferred back four. With Reece James absent, Stones is viewed as a potential candidate for England's right-back position.

Warnock, who has managed 20 different clubs during his 46-year coaching career, believes the defense will play a crucial role in determining how far England goes in the FIFA World Cup.

He also stated that Stones would be an ideal replacement for James ahead of the Round of 16 match at the Estadio Azteca.

Warnock told talkSPORT: "I think it all depends on how the back four perform."

"If you look at the strong teams, England's backline performed very poorly the other day."

"They have to step up. I think Guehi and Konsa are good, and I also like O'Reilly."

"It will be interesting to see who he selects at right-back. Personally, I think he might play Quansah there."

When asked whom he would play at right-back, Warnock said: "I would play Stones there."

Despite the ongoing debate over Tuchel's decision not to include several big-name players, such as Alexander-Arnold, Warnock did not directly say that the German coach had made a selection error.

Warnock added: "No matter which squad he picks, someone will question it. As a coach, you can never please everyone."

"He has to trust his judgment. After assessing the dressing room, he decided to exclude one or two people."

"For me, Luke Shaw deserved to be included at the end of the season."

"But Tuchel saw something else, so you have to trust his judgment. He is a top coach."

When asked if he would have included Alexander-Arnold in the 26-man squad, Warnock said: "I'm not 100% sure. I think we need a good defensive player; that's my opinion."

"I think we have the best midfield in this tournament."

“Anderson's through ball to Bellingham helped us score the second goal against DR Congo.”

"At this level, we must pass forward and break the defensive line, rather than passing sideways as many teams do."

"Anderson gives us that ability. Bellingham is in excellent form again."

"I like Gordon starting. I think many people don't realize that he has a full-back marking him closely."

"And we also have the best striker (Kane), whose second goal was brilliant."
