Patrick Vieira sacked Crystal Palace coach Shaun Derry in a row over 'overstepping his role', it has been revealed.
The former Arsenal midfielder confirmed earlier this week that it was his decision to sack Derry from his role as Eagles first-team coach.
Derry, who represented Palace for six years as a player over two spells, was promoted to the first-team shortly after Vieira arrived at Selhurst Park after initially re-joining the club as part of the academy's coaching staff in 2019.
The Athletic has, however, revealed why the relationship between Vieira and Derry broke down, and it dates as far back as October, when Palace suffered a 3-0 defeat to strugglers Everton.
The Frenchman entered the dressing room to find his first-team coach Derry berating the players after their dismal performance at Goodison Park.
Derry's comments were focused on passion and playing for the Palace badge with pride, but the problem being such displays of passion are not Vieira's style - and even worse it was not the only time it has happened.
Vieira is known for taking a calmer approach with his players and therefore it became a clash of personalities - not to say he is a soft touch, as he is a very disciplined manager.
The Palace boss did, however, refuse to be drawn on giving any reasons for Derry being sacked when he was quizzed by the media ahead of their clash with Manchester United this afternoon.
'This is the decision that I made,' Vieira said. 'I can confirm he is not a part of the staff.
'I don't want to go into details but, of course, he was an important figure, he played (for the club), he was the captain here.
'I don't want to go into details. He's been good to this club.'
Former Notts County and Cambridge United manager Derry declined to comment on the matter, when asked by The Athletic.
Palace will now focus on coming up against United and the search for a new first-team coach in the coming weeks.
