Vincent Kompany reveals he received assurances about Burnley's finances prior to taking the job

Vincent Kompany has revealed he received assurances about the club’s finances before agreeing to take the job at Turf Moor.

There were eyebrows raised when the Manchester City legend left Anderlecht for Burnley given the club’s relegation from the Premier League which compelled owners ALK Capital to pay back a significant proportion of a £65million loan taken out as part of a leveraged buy-out.

They have already sold England goalkeeper Nick Pope with a host of other players including Ben Mee and James Tarkowski leaving on free transfers but Kompany, who has a masters degree in business administration, is confident after talks with chairman Alan Pace he will be able to build a competitive team.

‘They (the owners) have been very transparent,’ he explained. ‘I had a lot of time and I made a choice I can live by because I feel it’s very well-informed.

‘You make surprising choices in life. The situation at this club doesn’t come along very often. They are in a rebuild, there isn’t any politics, things are simple and honest. What people tell you is what they mean and you roll with it.

‘What Burnley has done better than anyone else is be together and grow over time. I think it is possible here.’

Kompany hopes to make a number of signings including defenders Dan Ballard (Arsenal) and CJ Egan-Riley (Man City) and build his backroom team including former City team-mate Craig Bellamy in the next few days. Targets have also been lined up in case significant offers come in for star assets like Maxwel Cornet, Wout Weghorst, Dwight McNeil and Nathan Collins.

Kompany captained Manchester City to four Premier League titles in a remarkable 11-year spell at Manchester City but insists he isn’t looking backwards and hasn’t even visited the statue built in his honour at The Etihad.

‘I am not nostalgic at all,’ he said. ‘Some things are in your blood but I live very much for now.

‘Sometimes people will show me a picture of my playing days and that’s fine, but I am a coach now. That is the only thing I care about.

‘I am still to go and see the statue. I am so grateful but I find it hard to find words to explain it.

‘The other side of me is simple Vinny who is coming to Burnley and wants to see guys really have a fight and give something to the fans when they come to the game.

‘What I want is when fans have had a sh** week at work, come to the game and think ‘that has cheered me up’.

‘Nobody needs to talk to me about my City goal against Leicester or the statue, just tell me you had fun at our Burnley game.’

Kompany, 36, is hoping to persuade under-23s coach Mike Jackson to stay on his staff after he impressed as an interim last season following the sacking of Sean Dyche.

‘Mike is top. I couldn’t vouch enough for his character and who he is as a coach and a person,’ added Kompany.

‘This club is filled with good people. Building a culture is hard and takes time. I want to protect what Burnley has and add if I can.

‘Anything we need to speak about, we will do it directly to each other, that is how Mike and myself are. But I couldn’t be more impressed.’
