Manchester United have "got worse" under Ruben Amorim, says former club captain and record goalscorer Wayne Rooney.
The 20-time English champions appointed Amorim on 1 November last year to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.
But more than 10 months later, the Portuguese head coach appears to be showing few signs of being able to revive the team's fortunes.
His side delivered another dismal display in a 3-0 derby defeat at Manchester City on Sunday, with many supporters in the away end leaving long before the final whistle.
"I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be on the manager and the players," said the former England striker on the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, which you can now listen to on BBC Sounds.
"But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression, and at least we're seeing things that will get results in the near future.
"We're seeing none of that, and it is very difficult. There was an image towards the end of the game where I saw the Manchester United fans leaving.
"You could hear the fans singing Amorim's name, but I think that is so powerful that the United fans were leaving the game.
"You know the game is over and I think they were very disappointed in what they were seeing. It is hard to see how it continues.
"What are the patterns? What are we seeing what might improve the team moving forward?"
United finished 15th in the league last term with 42 points, their lowest position since 1989–90. They earned their fewest points in a top-flight season since they were last relegated in 1973–74.
Since Amorim's arrival they have spent about £250m on new signings, while shipping out most of their so-called 'bomb squad'.
This has allowed the 40-year-old coach to revamp his side into a 3-4-3 system that he has vowed not to deviate from after enjoying success with Sporting.
However, many of last season's problems already appear to be resurfacing.
"I think after the last year when Ten Hag got sacked and Ruben came in, we're hearing how they're going to play and it is going to change," said Rooney, who scored 253 goals for United between 2004 and 2017.
"I think if the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse."

Amorim must try by all means to adapt the situation, so we do here some players giving complain, the management must try to look on it where is the main problem between the players and head coach. It doesn't make sense from top 5 now the club wants to go for relegation.

This is the worst ever scenario I have witnessed as an avid Manchester United fan since I started supporting this team back then in 1994. Sincerely speaking, Amorin takes the largest portion of the current underwhelming situation in this club. Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United are very different teams playing in different leagues. It's Amorin's stubborness of sticking to one pattern of formation, forgetting that every match requires different approach base on the particular situation of that very match. How can someone remain persistent on a single idea that is not producing fruitful results? Most successful teams in Europe are well known for using 4-3-3/4-4-2/4-2-3-1 formations. And switches quickly to another formation if the initial plan fails going forward. But Amorin's case is not like that. The worst thing is that he doesn't listen to advise from greats when the going gets tougher. After all, every successful individual must be triggered by one or two individuals through different aids. In life, we must lean on each other to grow. He don't even have a man-management spirit. A good coach is fully aware that he's not only training or managing footballers but also he's managing human beings. The dude should just go kawai, period!🚶🚶🚶🚶🚶🚶🚶🚶
well, you deserve a like 👍

Yes, you are right, Rooney. Ruben's system does not suit MU. He is adamant on his system of play though it does not bear fruit. Next game against Chelsea. If MU loses it again, get a new manager whose idea suits MU. Against Man City Bruno played deep though he can deliver goal. Sesko was starved of balls passed to him.
infant, if the elephant is dead, the ant showcase it power . Rooney too is talking about someone's coaching role. Rooney who has never succeeded in coaching is also making nuisance noice on Amorim.

the thing is that his squad against city had a market value of 42 millions... top clubs from other leagues are not even 42 millions, in EPL few teams are better in terms of market value then United , yet he fails miserably, not just city, cause city has a great team but against anyone, any team from any league can beat this team , so coach has to be blamed for shitty results.. or another solution is that everyone should calm down and let the players breath, yes they are good players but they haven't played in such pressure condition.. look at all the players man united have, they haven't come from top clubs where you have a certain standard.. they all came from mid table teams or low tier leagues... i think that's the only reason that players can't play ,they have talent, but there is not a single leader or single world class player to whom they all listen... no senior player to make you gster better, to give them advice,.. At Real Madrid Benzema told everyone infront of vini not to pass to him, he is playing against him, they were leaders their who took the shit of young players but at Man United , no body is star nor they came from star club ,nor they have faced such pressure to win every match..

In my opinion what to do for the opportunity to just wait for a match with Chelsea🥱for me it is not to be a win or a loss is no longer important to fire as it has been proven that Amorim is not worthy of Man Utd👎 for me to lose to Man City it is normal but if you lose the Division 4 club it doesn't make sense🤔🤫

it's time to change the formation to 4231 or 433 that suit the players. And Nuno Espirito Santo can lead us to those glory days again.

Bro it's nothing to do with tactics. Every manager since Ferguson came in with their own tactics and nothing has sustainably worked because the squad is constantly tacked together with bandaids. Like you I'm a long term fan, since the early 80's. I saw Ferguson come in, people doubted him and said Aberdeen was nothing like United but eventually he made it work and the rewards came in spades. Like Ferguson, Amorim is clearing out the underperformers, Ferguson got rid of the likes of Moran, McGrath and many others who had not delivered. Those players went on to successful careers elsewhere as will some of Amorim's cast offs. There will be mistakes, there will be successes but ultimately things will click. Think about the fact that only one first team player Ferguson inherited was there for the first title win, Robson, and it's obvious why that was. This squad doesn't have a Robson, the build will take longer and it'll get there if allowed time. I see the parallels. Your problem is that until Ferguson retired all you knew were good times, try to be patient and you will be happy with how things turn out

What people fail to understand is that past managers were putting in bandaid solutions, getting some results before inevitably falling away. What is happening now is something akin to a complete reconstruction of the squad, guys like Casemiro, Bruno, Dalot, Shaw and Maguire will not be part of the next squad that challenges at the top of the table. What is happening is a fundamental change at a club where things were allowed to decay for years. Similar to Liverpool under Gillet and Hicks where there was pain before progress. The problem here is the specter of the Glazers still hangs over everything which makes everything so much harder and why things have fallen further. Back Amorim, like Ferguson was backed after lower half finishes in consecutive seasons, and the rewards will come. Stick with him and we will see some rewards, not today, not tomorrow or even next week or next month, but rewards will come with even more turnover. This is the beginning of the process, not the end
