Wayne Rooney has insisted that he was surprised to not see AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori in England's 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The former Chelsea youngster helped AC Milan claim their first Serie A title in 11 years last season and has massively impressed since making the move to Italy in search of regular first-team action.
The 24-year-old, however, struggled on his return to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League and was eventually sent off, which may have hampered his chances.
Either way Tomori was one of the notable absentees from Gareth Southgate squad as he opted to pick the likes of Harry Maguire, John Stones, Eric Dier, Conor Coady and Ben White ahead of him in defence.
The all-time top goalscorer for both England and Manchester United revealed the only surprise from Southgate's squad was that Tomori was missing.
'I think when you look at the squad it's probably as strong as it could be. I think the only one is Tomori from my point of view,' Rooney told TalkSport.
'He is probably one that was pushing to be in the squad and will be disappointed that he is not. It's really what I expected.'
The five-time Premier League title winner believes he has picked Tottenham defender Eric Dier over Tomori with the intention of potentially playing a back three at the major tournament.
Although, the former Derby County manager is hoping to see a back four with more attacking players on the pitch.
Rooney added: I don't know. I think that is a big question and only Gareth can answer that.
'I think with Harry Maguire not playing as much as he would want I reckon he might go for the protection of three centre-backs.
'Perhaps that is why he's gone with Eric Dier over Tomori as he fits into the back three.
'I hope he goes with a four and gets another attacker on the pitch. That's what I hope, but I reckon he will go with a three.'

Whoever wrote this article is daft! So one bad game at the bridge hampered his chances but Maguire has been horrible all year. Well I don’t feel sorry for Tomori or Abraham they should have played for Nigeria
