'We haven't won the league' – Jeglertz not overexcited by Man City's WSL lead

Andree Jeglertz warned Manchester City not to get ahead of themselves, saying: "We haven't won the league".

City won their 13th straight match in the Women's Super League by thrashing reigning champions Chelsea 5-1 and opening up an 11-point gap at the top of the table.

Kerolin scored a hat-trick, with Khadija Shaw and Vivianne Miedema also getting on the scoresheet, with Alyssa Thompson netting Chelsea's lone goal.

It was City's first home win over Chelsea since March 2023, with this victory moving them 12 points ahead of the Blues, who slipped down to third in the table after Manchester United's win earlier on Sunday.

And the only team to have a lead of more than 10 points at the top of the WSL in the history of the competition was Chelsea at the end of last season (12 over Arsenal).

"We haven't won the league," Jeglertz said. "I will never say that [it's won] until it's done.

"Just playing that kind of game, the result is a fantastic win. We are getting players onto the field and keeping the standard high, and that is very important for the rest of the season.

"We played with a confidence that is not rare in football, but we are a team that is so determined. We attack on the transition, and we own their half and control the game.

"We had so many layers, but we did everything with determination. That's the crucial thing.

"There are a lot of expectations on this team now, and that's when they've delivered the best performance. I think that's impressive from this group."

City are overwhelming favourites to clinch the WSL title this season, however, with the Opta supercomputer giving them a 97.1% chance of finishing top. Chelsea's chances have dropped to just 0.9%.

Chelsea have now lost three of their last five WSL away games (W2), while it is the first time they have lost back-to-back league matches since July 2015.

Following the loss at Arsenal, Sonia Bompastor had ruled Chelsea out of the title race before backtracking from that, and she insists her side will not turn their focus away from the league despite the deficit at the top.

"There are a lot of things to say about the performance. Really disappointed," Bompastor said.

"We were not efficient at all on the pitch. We made too many mistakes, and when you play against a team like Manchester City, you just get punished.

"We are in a tough moment. It's tough for everyone – for players, for staff. We are not going to shy away from that. We need to find solutions. I need to find solutions as the manager. We have quality in this squad to be confident.

"We need to focus on every game. We have enough equality in the squad to achieve what we want this season. Every game will be tough for us, and every game will be important.

"We need to go into the next one knowing that we need to stay in the present."
