Petkovic leaves Swiss role
Switzerland have seen long-term manager Vladimir Petkovic leave his role as head coach after helping the side reach their first Euro quarter-final.
Petkovic has joined French side Bordeaux after 7 years with the national team.
He joined in 2014 having spent 2 years in Italy with Lazio. The Bosnian-Swiss coach will take charge of the team which finished 12th place in Ligue 1 last season.
Swiss captain Granit Xhaka took to social media to leave his own message to his long-term coach who gave him the armband after Stefan Lichtsteiner’s departure.
‘What a journey! Mister, I just want to thank you for everything. We made history together! It’s been an unbelievable journey – thank you for all your hard work, for your support and for the way you have shaped a national team into a group of brothers. We won’t forget your work and we wish you all the best in Bordeaux,’ wrote Xhaka.
Wenger tipped to take Swiss job
An interesting name brought to the table to be Petkovic’s replacement is former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
Wenger signed captain Xhaka at Arsenal and would reunite with him after leaving the club in 2018.
Swiss outlet Blick via Get French Football News have reported the news and mentioned that the ex-Arsenal coach’s ability to peak both French and German is a big pull along with his obvious credentials.
There’s been rumours about when Wenger might return to the game but currently involved in FIFA as the Chief of Global Football Development he has been integral in theorising about changes to the sport.
Additionally, Wenger has championed the idea of having a World Cup every two years, something he would be very involved in were he to take the Swiss job.
“More knockout matches, fewer qualifying games. That’s what the fans want,” Wenger said.
Only time will tell what could happen for Wenger in the future.

Wenger returning to Arsenal is an insult, let the club and fans reap what they wanted. He was insulted a lot by both fans and club management who were hiding behind his back for all their financial mismanagement. Now the club hierarchy is fully under the spotlight, "you can run but you can't hide!"
