After months on pause, football restarted on Saturday as the Bundesliga became the first of Europe's major leagues to return to action since COVID-19.

Germany's top-flight is packed full of talent, with players such as Jadon Sancho, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner taking the fancy of Liverpool in recent years if rumours are to be believed.

People will have tuned in eagerly to catch a glimpse of the players who are linked with their club, with the latter name in particular performing to a level that should only heighten the interest of Jurgen Klopp.

Werner started for RB Leipzig against Freiburg, and although his team could only secure a 1-1 draw, the specifics of his display suggest that he's tailor-made for the Reds.

The 24-year-old operated as the complete attacker on the day, with Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann using the forward as his primary offensive weapon throughout.

Crucially, Werner played in a variety of different positions during the contest - from the left, to the centre, to the right. He performed in a manner that suggested he'd be able to start for Liverpool or cover for any one of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino without struggling.

Leipzig initially used a 3-5-2 formation, with Werner deployed as the left-sided striker alongside Youssef Poulsen.

After conceding before half-time, though, Naglesmann switched to use a 4-2-2-2 shape. Werner swapped sides with Poulsen to play as a right-sided striker, before eventually being used as a wide forward late in the match - on the left in a 4-2-3-1.

He's lightning quick and is consequently able to pose a threat in behind opposing defences like Salah and Mane, but he's also developed a competence when instructed to drop deeper before linking with others like Firmino.

He showcased that skill against Freiburg, with an example pictured below.

His team aimed to build from the back using the goalkeeper, and rather than hanging on the shoulder of one of Freiburg's defenders to threaten with his pace, Werner instead dropped into midfield as Firmino often does.

He controlled the ball before turning and making a through pass to Poulssen behind Freiburg's defensive line.

The match lasted for 90 minutes but despite that, Werner offered an insight into how he's evolved this season into a player who possesses a valuable mixture of traits from each of Liverpool's infamous trio of attackers.

He took two shots on the day with both hitting the target, and more impressively, he assisted as many as five shots for his teammates - with the next-best player posting just three shot assists.

Nobody knows whether the German international will make the move to Merseyside in the coming months but if he does, he's almost certain to add another dimension to Liverpool's game.
