West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca is reportedly set to be out for the rest of the season after the Italian underwent an operation on his knee in Rome this week

West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca is set to miss the rest of the Premier League season.

The Italian striker has missed all five of West Ham’s matches since returning from the international break with Italy, where he featured twice off the bench against England and Malta.

Following the issue, having had a number of knee problems in recent months, Scamacca underwent knee surgery on Saturday morning.

But now, reports in Italy suggest that Scamacca will not feature again for West Ham this season, with the striker facing a timescale of around two to three months before he can return to action.

A statement from the Policlinico Gemelli hospital in Rome, via Gazzetta Dello Sport, confirmed that the forward was successfully operated on in Rome following a right knee external meniscus tear.

The statement added that the operation lasted a few minutes, incorporating an arthroscopy of the knee, which highlighted the tear, with Scamacca now "progressing satisfactorily" post operation and facing a rehabilitation period of between two to three months for a full athletic recovery.

Scamacca has played 27 times in all competitions for West Ham since his summer switch from Italian side Genoa, scoring eight goals, which includes three strikes in the Premier League.
