What Eric Bailly's injury means for Man Utd's £80m transfer pursuit of Maguire

Manchester United could be forced to meet Leicester's £80million asking price for Harry Maguire after defender Eric Bailly suffered a knee injury that makes him a big doubt for the new season.

Bailly was carried off just minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute in United's 2-1 victory over Tottenham in the ICC Cup.

The Ivory Coast international appeared to twist his knee when his studs stuck in the turf as he attempted to challenge Spurs forward Song Heung-min.

He looked in agony as medics carried him to the dressing room – and will now undergo a scan to find out the extent of the damage when United return to Manchester.

Solskjaer said: "It's never nice when you get an injury - and not worth it when you lose a player.

"Eric has done his knee, but we're not sure how bad it is. We need to get back to Manchester and do the scans, but let's hope for the best."

United have been tracking Maguire all summer – and moved into pole position when Manchester City refused to go higher than £60million for the England international.

Maguire has told Leicester he wants a new challenge, but the Foxes will not budge on their belief that he is worth more than the £75million Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk.

There are just two weeks left until the transfer window closes, but Solskjaer refused to respond when asked specifically if his club will go back into the market for a new centre-back.

He said: "We've had six centre-backs rotating - and they've all done well. Phil Jones played first three games, so it was his turn to be rested today.

"Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling took their chance and looked really assured at the back. But of course, you're never happy when you get injuries. Let's hope it's not too bad for Eric."
