Paul Pogba has emerged as possible transfer target for Manchester City but it is not the first time the France international has been linked with a move to the Premier League champions.

Pogba has endured a difficult season, like many of his high-profile teammates, at Old Trafford and now appears destined to end his second spell at the club after five a rollercoaster five-year period during which he has largely flattered to deceive or fulfil his abundant potential.

City, meanwhile, are still licking their wounds after Wednesday night's Champions League demise at the hands of Real Madrid and are reportedly already considering how to strengthen their already formidable squad in the summer.

With long-serving stalwart Fernandinho set to depart at the end of the season and Ikay Gundogan's contract expiring in just over 12 months'time, midfield is an area of concern for City.

Pogba's versatility, allied to the fact he is available on a free, renders him of significant interest to Guardiola and the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager has always been a keen admirer of the 29-year-old.

Speaking back in 2017, he noted the former Juventus star's ability to play in a number of different positions, saying: "I met Paul Pogba for the first time when Bayern Munich played Juventus.

"In both games I was really impressed. He played in 10 positions. He is an outstanding player and he can do absolutely everything.

"Of course sometimes it's not easy to handle the expectations you have when you arrive here, especially with the amount of money. It wasn't easy.

"He's an outstanding player and I think he made a good season.'
