The draw for the 2019/20 Champions League Group Stages takes place on Thursday afternoon.
Manchester United will miss out on a place among Europe's elite sides for the first time since the 2016/17 season.
Instead, they will have to compete in the Europa League, a competition they won when they were last involved, beating Ajax 2-0 in the 2017 final.
Last season was a tough campaign for the Red Devils and despite an initial upsurge in form, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unable to steer the club to a top-four finish, as they ended the season sixth in the Premier League table.
Four points from a possible nine isn't the best start for the Norwegian boss this time around either and with the pressure on this weekend's clash with Southampton intensified by the Crystal Palace defeat last Saturday.
However, despite their recent fall from grace, Manchester United's long-standing success as one of Europe's largest powerhouses shouldn't be forgotten.
The Red Devils lifted the Champions League last in 2008, whilst Chelsea and Liverpool are the only England sides to have lifted it since.
That rainy night in Moscow was United's third triumph in Europe and their historic success in the competition has been underlined by some new data.
Transfermarkt have created a league table, based on every result in Champions League and European Cup history.
Of course, the number of games each team has played differs, due to some teams not qualifying every year and others getting to the latter stages of the tournament more often than others
.
Still, it makes for an interesting read and Manchester United sit fourth in the all-time rankings, the highest of any English side.
Real Madrid lead the way at the top, followed by Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Liverpool sit eighth, behind the likes of AC Milan, Juventus and FC Porto, whilst come in 11th spot and Chelsea in 13th, respectively.
Manchester City don't make the 30-team cut and neither do Tottenham Hotspur, underlining their recent rise to fame.
Whilst it's a little doom and gloom at Old Trafford in the present, a glimpse back to the past should fill United fans with a little more joy ahead of their Europa League draw on Friday.

I'm sure if the editor share the 2nd page of the list, we might find our noisy neighbour there. π

This list is for one, for all the history of the tournament, so it depends on how many times a team qualifies as to how many points they have the opportunity to get. Secondly, it means nothing, the only thing that matters is how many times a club wins it so we have some serious work to do
