Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League campaign continues tonight as they face PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of their round of 16 knockout tie. The Gunners have travelled to the Netherlands for the fixture, which will be held at Eindhoven’s Philips Stadion.
Arsenal progressed to the knockout stages of the competition in third place in the league phase table, having won six of their eight games. Following their 2-1 win over Girona in January, Mikel Arteta’s side were behind only leaders Liverpool and Barcelona.
Their Dutch opponents tonight ended the league phase in 14th place. However, their last Champions League win was a 3-2 win over Liverpool – the Reds’ only defeat in the competition thus far.
Arsenal and PSV also met last season, which ended in an emphatic 4-0 win to the Gunners in their first season in the European top flight since the 2016/17 season. Ahead of tonight’s game, Arteta said his side has what it takes to progress despite losing attackers including Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz to injury.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "This year, we have been much more consistent. We have scored a lot of goals and have only conceded three and the lowest Expected Goals in the competition. That’s a big platform. We have those resources, that’s what the team has already done. Now we have to continue to do it."
The winner after next week’s second leg will face either Real Madrid or Atlético Madrid in the quarter finals. Unlike the majority of Champions League fixtures, PSV vs Arsenal will not be shown on TNT Sports, but there’s still a way to watch the game completely free.
