The top performing stars in Europe's top leagues have been revealed by the CIES Football Observatory - with some surprising names making the list.

The organisation revealed its ranking comparing each club's best player this calendar year irrespective of their position, using a unique methodology to produce a scoring system for league matches since January 1.

No prizes for guessing that Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi tops the charts - with an incredible score of 92.5 out of 100 having played 998 minutes, followed by Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski on 89.5 points.

But a few eyebrows will be raised to see Chelsea midfielder Jorginho coming behind them in third place - level with the Polish star on 89.5. The Italian's performances were enough to put him two places higher than Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo - who scored 89.3.

Jorginho has netted six goals in the league and registered one assist this season from 16 starts - becoming a trusted member of the first team squad under new boss Thomas Tuchel after being a sporadic player with predecessor Frank Lampard.

Manchester City's top performing star was the impressive Ruben Dias, who has helped shore up Pep Guardiola's defence since joining for £65million last summer. He came just below Jorginho in fourth.

Other names in the top ten were Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos - who has turned in some quality displays to help inspire a mini resurgence from Los Blancos. The German racked up 87.6 points in sixth place.

Meanwhile, down in tenth was Dortmund star Jadon Sancho - who had a quiet start to the campaign in the Bundesliga but who has really come alive in recent months with eight goals in 2021.

Only two Premier League stars made the top ten, with Wilfried Ndidi coming out on top as Leicester City's best player and the third best star from the English top flight with 85.3 points.

Elsewhere, Luke Shaw (83.4) has been flying the flag for Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes might be leading the way with goals and assists, but the left back has turned a corner and has been producing some solid displays in defence to keep United in the reckoning for the top four.

Harry Kane was rated as Tottenham's top star, while new Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara came out first for struggling Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Granit Xhaka may blow hot and cold for Arsenal but his displays in 2021 are good enough to make him the Gunners' best performer.

Ademola Lookman is doing his best to rescue Fulham from relegation as is ranked as their best star, while there are no real shocks to see Declan Rice and Ollie Watkins come out on top for West Ham and Aston Villa respectively.
