Who do England want next? Chris Sutton on Japan, Senegal and Colombia

England are safely through to the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup, however who they will face in the next round is not yet known.

Depending on whether they beat Belgium in their final Group G game, and who wins or comes second in Group H, England will play one of three nations - Japan, Senegal or Colombia.

Here, Sportsmail's Chris Sutton looks at each side, and evaluates which one Gareth Southgate will be hoping his team play next...

JAPAN

They were incredibly fortunate to be playing against 10 men for most of their opener against Colombia. That victory has given them a chance of qualification but if they reach the last 16, I do not see them having enough substance to cause England problems.

Japan are a well-organised team who can pass the ball but lack firepower. They are the side England would most want to face.

DANGER RATING: 1/5

SENEGAL

This is a physical team with plenty of athleticism. Their main weapon is Sadio Mane. England’s three centre halves have not really been tested in their first two games and we know what the Liverpool forward can do to defences.

While Senegal can hurt England, they are not too solid at the back. Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly may have attracted interest from Premier League clubs but he can be rash.

DANGER RATING: 3/5

COLOMBIA

The team England want to avoid. We didn’t see the real Colombia against Japan, when they had to play most of the match with 10 men.

James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao and Juan Cuadrado all looked in fine form against Poland as Colombia were utterly ruthless. They can be vulnerable defensively, though. Davinson Sanchez’s mistake led to Japan’s penalty in the first game.
