Manchester City’s failure to sign Frenkie De Jong is likely to force the club into smashing their transfer record this summer.
Pep Guardiola was desperate to sign the Dutchman having earmarked him as a long-term successor to Fernandinho and had spoken to Netherlands boss and former team-mate Ronald Koeman about the midfielder's temperament.
City were willing to better Barcelona's £76million deal for the 21-year-old but he opted for the Spanish giants and will move to the Camp Nou this summer.
It means, following Jorginho's decision to join Chelsea last summer, that City have failed in their last two attempts to replace Fernandinho and the club are now assessing options elsewhere.
Lyon star Tanguy Ndombele was sensational in a 2-1 win against City at the Etihad in September and he the cub's list of alternatives to De Jong.
The Frenchman has been compared to Chelsea legend Michael Essien and Metro understands the 22-year-old has his 'heart set' on playing under Guardiola.
However, City's public pursuit of De Jong has handed Lyon an early advantage in negotiations. allowing them to demand around £80m for Ndombele.
The French club feel he is on par with De Jong and are under little financial pressure to sell after making a £46m operating profit in the last financial year.
City have good relations with Lyon following Jason Denayer's move to France but City value Ndombele at closer to £60m – some £20m short of Lyon's asking price.
Riyad Mahrez became the club's record signing when he completed a £60m move from Leicester City last summer but Guardiola will realistically have to break that again to sign Ndombele.
The midfielder is content at Lyon but knows a move to the Premier League this summer would improve his chances of making France's squad for the 2020 European Championships.
City reportedly face a FIFA embargo on signing players for two transfer windows with the club under investigation with regards to the signing of eight players under the age of 18 from overseas and for potential breaches of third-party ownership rules.

Don't get your hopes too high... City can but only if they stay 100%focused, disciplined and direct when attacking. They lack the experience, look ar what happened with swansea, if that was in the champs lg with a top side they are definitely out
Same goes for all teams left in the competition 😜

I seriously think City have some unknown CDM they want and don't want to announce who it is yet to avoid what happened with Fred and Gorginho

Ndombele is a successor not a replacement for fernandinho.... he'll be second choice next season but he might play an equal number of games with Fernandinho

Why do the AF guys want to shove a player to city who is not even quarter Fernandino
You've not watched Ndombele then.

Thomas Partey is twice better than this guy. If a player gives you problems when you play against him it doesnt mean he is better playing for you. Its good Gorginho went to Chelsea, he is just like Fabian Delph. He blows hot and cold. Very unrealiable. City will not buy just put of desperation . They may even get a player who is not too well known and groom him for that position. Remember Fernandinho did not have a great start at all but here we are.

Here we go again .....Assuming we can even operate in the transfer market this summer with rumours of a transfer ban incoming, lets not drag this one out all summer FFS ... I'm not advocating we just cough up what ever the selling club initially demand, but lets get realistic
