Why Prince William supports Aston Villa: Truth behind choice

Villa Park enjoyed an historic night as the famous old ground returned to Europe's premier club competition with Aston Villa's victory over Bayern Munich.

Jhon Duran's 79th minute winner handed the Villans' the win much to the unadulterated joy of the home supporters - which, notably, included Prince William.

No stranger to the famous old ground in Birmingham, the Prince of Wales kicked every ball amid a raucous atmosphere, toasting the triumph with Thomas van Straubenzee, one of his closest friends and Princess Charlotte's godfather, in a repeat of their 1982 European Cup final win.

After Villa's victory, as he made his way out of the mixed zone, he hoarsely admitted: "'I've lost my voice. I can't quite believe it. 42 years."

But why does he support Aston Villa, a club who can count Ozzy Osbourne and Tom Hanks amongst its celebrity fans?

He admitted in an interview in 2015: “A long time ago at school I got into football big time. I was looking around for clubs. All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn’t want to follow the run of the mill teams.

“I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments.

“Aston Villa’s always had a great history. I have got friends of mine who support Aston Villa and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton v Aston Villa back in 2000. Sadly, Villa went on to lose to Chelsea.

“It was fantastic, I sat with all the fans with my red beanie on, and I was sat with all the Brummie fans and had a great time.

“It was the atmosphere, the camaraderie and I really felt that there was something I could connect with.”

Certainly, judging by his reaction during Wednesday night's victory, he appears to have found what he was looking for.
