Why didn't the Nottingham Forest wall shuffle across for Ivan Toney's free-kick?

Call it cunning from Ivan Toney. Call it cheating. Call it whatever you want but Nottingham Forest’s players were moronic in the extreme in this moment and they only have themselves to blame.

Everybody saw Toney shift the ball as he stood over the free-kick. He made no secret of the fact he was making a better angle for himself.

So why didn’t Forest’s players shuffle across accordingly? It isn’t rocket science, lads. They had four men in the wall, and a draught excluder behind.

Ryan Yates was arranging it all with goalkeeper Matt Turner. All it needed was one of them to say: ‘Lads, he’s moved it a half a yard to the left.’

Shuffle across and they would have avoided all those strange complaints from Nuno Espirito Santo about why VAR should have got involved.

His gripe should not be with Stockley Park. It should be with his own wall. Blame them for bad communication, and the fact Yates bizarrely jumped inside, while Callum Hudson-Odoi was benefiting nobody as he chilled at the side of the wall.

Toney simply had to pass the ball into the back of the net.

On a day when Arsenal set-piece coach Nicolas Jover won praise, naive Forest showed they need to do some work of their own.
