Manchester United supporters have mixed feelings on Cody Gakpo as their arch-rivals Liverpool FC edge closer to signing him despite long-standing interest from Old Trafford.
Gakpo, 23, has earned rave reviews for his performances this season, and he took that form to the World Cup with three goals in five appearances there. Before that, the Netherlands international had netted 15 goals - and provided 18 assists - from 29 games with PSV in all competitions.
Erik ten Hag wanted to sign Gakpo in the summer, but instead opted to recruit Antony from Ajax at that stage. He remains on the radar at Old Trafford as the market prepares to reopen next month, but Liverpool are now reported to have held "advanced talks" over his winter transfer with an initial £37million fee mooted.
Our sister publication Liverpool Echo are reporting that Gakpo is the primary target for Jurgen Klopp as he looks to bolster his ranks with injuries to forwards Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, who are expected to be unavailable until March and February respectively.
It's understood Liverpool have accelerated interest due to Diaz's injury and other clubs being in the chase.
Addressing his future, PSV manager and United favourite Ruud van Nistelrooy said: "If I had the choice, I prefer the summer, but it can also be now. You know, there comes a time when you can't say no."
After watching tonight's news filter through on social media, United supporters served up varied reaction as demands were made to the board to step up and match what Liverpool have done. However, others argue that Gakpo is not the striker they need to replace Cristiano Ronaldo next month.
