Winning back-to-back league titles is 'not normal in Spain', insists Flick

Hansi Flick believes winning consecutive LaLiga titles is "not normal", with his Barcelona side on the cusp of achieving the feat.

Holding an 11-point lead with four league games to go, Barca can clinch the title if they avoid defeat against rivals Real Madrid in El Clasico.

The last team to win back-to-back LaLiga titles were Barca themselves in 2017-18 and 2018-19, while they also did so in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

Since 2000, the only other teams to have won two LaLiga titles in a row are Barca (2004-05 and 2005-06), Madrid (2006-07 and 2007-08) and the Blaugrana again (2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11).

At home, Barca have won two of their last three LaLiga meetings with Madrid (L1), twice as many victories as they managed in their previous seven home games against them in the competition (W1 D3 L3).

Barca have also won their last 10 LaLiga matches, their best run under Flick.

Only four managers in the club's history have achieved 11 consecutive league victories: Pep Guardiola (a run of 16 and another of 11), Frank Rijkaard (14), Luis Enrique (12) and Tito Vilanova (11).

Flick believes his Barca side are on the brink of achieving something special, especially considering the youthful nature of his squad.

"The atmosphere, the connection between the players is something really special," the German coach said.

"We have players with a lot of quality, world-class players. The connection between everyone is amazing – [especially between] the academy players because they have known each other many years.

"Winning a second title with this young team would be unbelievable.

"The players have made a fantastic job and now we want to win the title, the second in a row, which is amazing, and not normal here in Spain.

"It will not be easy to pick 11 players [to face Madrid]. We have nearly everyone back. Everyone gives an amazing level.

"We want to play our game and not focus about other things. It's clear what we have to do and we want to show it. We are in this situation because we played a fantastic season as a team."

Flick is aiming to become just the fourth Barca coach in the 21st century to win LaLiga in his first two seasons in charge, after Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde.
