Wolves star Jota insists Liverpool should be crowned Premier League champions

Wolves star Diogo Jota believes Liverpool should be awarded the title if the coronavirus pandemic stops the Premier League season from finishing.

When top-flight football in England was suspended last month due to the spread of Covid-19, Liverpool were 25 points clear of second-placed Manchester City with nine games remaining.

There is still no timescale for resuming football while the disease continues to affect every area of life, with some believing 2019-20 may have to be abandoned. Yet if that were to happen, Jota would call for Liverpool to be rewarded.

The Portuguese forward said: 'This question is very complicated. In case we have the misfortune of not being able to end the season, I think that few people would oppose this.

'Of course, there are always rival clubs that could be against that, but I think 95 per cent of the people would agree. For me they would be fair champions.

'[They are the strongest team in the league]. Even though we lost both games, we were a small step away from doing something different in both games.

'But this year, in addition to having a very fluid style of play, they are very strong and have had a bit of luck as well, which it takes to be a champion.'

Wolves were fighting for European football for the second consecutive season before play was halted, while they also drew 1-1 at Olympiakos in the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie, in one of the final games before the shutdown.
