Xavi on Euro 2020's Spain stadium: The San Mames atmosphere is spectacular

The relationship between Xavi and Athletic Club has always been a special one, thanks largely to Estadio San Mames, which the ex-Barcelona man has called spectacular.

The now retired midfielder once expressed his regret at never having been able to play at the stadium in the colours of Athletic Club.

"I only have good memories of San Mames," Xavi said, speaking to UEFA about the stadium which will represent Spain in Euro 2020.

"They've always treated me marvellously, I almost felt like I was playing at home, or even more so sometimes.

"They always gave me an ovation when I played there and it's amazing how people treat me on the streets of Bilbao.

"What's more, you breathe a footballing atmosphere there and it's a stadium where you feel tremendous respect and admiration."

It is not just the city and the people who impress the Catalan, but also the stadium itself.

"San Mames is an extraordinary football atmosphere of nobility and pure football," Xavi continued.

"The atmosphere there is spectacular, and especially shared with Euro 2020, it makes you want to go to a game and enjoy it.

"If my calendar allows and the dates work then I would like to be there.

"A European Championship, and above all at San Mames, will be extraordinary, I recommend it to all football fans and lovers."

San Mames will host fixtures in both the group stage and early knock-out rounds of the competition.
