Djibril Cissé has urged Mason Greenwood (23) to raise his level of consistency as Marseille prepare to face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
“The margin of progression for Greenwood is to be more consistent, to be much more influential and impactful in the game,” the former OM striker (37 goals between 2006 and 2008) told L’Équipe. “We’ve seen his extraordinary technical quality – he provokes, he dribbles left or right, he destabilises opponents. But it needs to be repeated more often.”
Greenwood joined Marseille in 2024 after charges of attempted rape and assault brought against him in England were dropped in early 2023. His debut season in Ligue 1 saw him finish joint-top scorer with 21 goals, but doubts remained over his defensive work and influence in big matches. Former OM man Mamadou Niang stressed, “Some great players can afford not to make the run, but not at OM,” in the same interview with L’Équipe. Greenwood will likely start against Real Madrid on Tuesday before PSG visit the Vélodrome on Sunday.GFFN | George Boxall
