Don Carlo! OFFICIAL: Ancelotti wins The Best FIFA Men’s Coach award for 2024
Five of football's finest coaches – Alonso, Ancelotti, de la Fuente, Guardiola and Scaloni - have been shortlisted for the award.
Xabi Alonso, Carlo Ancelotti, Luis de la Fuente, Pep Guardiola and Lionel Scaloni have been nominated for The Best FIFA Men’s Coach award for 2024.
Fans can now vote for their standout candidate for the illustrious prize, with the quintet having enjoyed great success with Bayer Leverkusen, Real Madrid, Spain, Manchester City and Argentina, respectively.
FIFA profiles the five men who have made the shortlist and highlights their standout achievements during the qualification period of 21 August 2023 to 10 August 2024.
Xabi Alonso
Former Spain international Alonso has taken his effortless playing style into the dugout and made history last season with title-winners Bayer Leverkusen becoming the first team ever to go undefeated in a German Bundesliga campaign.
Leverkusen – who ditched their Neverkusen tag and were instead dubbed Neverlusen–embarked on a 51-match unbeaten run in all competitions as they also lifted the DFB-Pokal trophy. Alonso, who took charge of Die Schwarzrotenin 2022, guided his side to the UEFA Europa League final, where they suffered their one and only defeat of the campaign at the hands of Atalanta.
Carlo Ancelotti
The combination of Ancelotti and Real Madrid have become synonymous with silverware, and there was no let-upin their accumulation of titles and trophies during the 2023/24 season, with another domestic double secured as Los Blancossecured both La Liga and Supercopa de Espana crowns.
Further success was to follow in the UEFA Champions League final, with Real defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley to secure their 15th European title, and sixth in the past 11 seasons, booking their place in the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2024™ in the process.
Luis de la Fuente
De la Fuente guided Spain back to the summit of European football for the first time since 2012 as La Roja swept all before them to claim the UEFA EURO 2024 title. The 2-1 final scoreline against England secured by Mikel Oyarzabal’s late winner suggested a close contest, but in truth Spain were always in control and could have won by a greater margin.
Having topped their group with a 100 per cent record and three clean sheets following victories over Croatia, Albania and Italy, Spain despatched Georgia, hosts Germany and 2022 World Cup finalists France en route to the final, lifting the trophy in style under de la Fuente’s guidance.
Pep Guardiola
The current holder of The Best Men’s Coach award is in contention for the honour once again with Manchester City adding three further significant pieces of silverware to their trophy cabinet during the qualification period, starting with the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup™crown after a 4-0 demolition of Fluminense.
That triumph in Saudi Arabia was followed by yet another English Premier League (EPL) title – City’s sixth from the last seven campaigns – with Guardiola crowned EPL Manager of the Season, before he guided the Etihad Stadium outfit to FA Community Shield success in August 2024.
Lionel Scaloni
FIFA World Cup™ holders Argentina continue to thrive on the international scene under Scaloni’s stewardship with the CONMEBOL Copa America retained in 2024 following a tense 1-0 victory against Colombia secured by Lautaro Martinez’s 112nd-minute goal.
La Albiceleste were in imperious form throughout the tournament in the USA, conceding only one goal across six matches – against Ecuador in the quarter-finals. Argentina are also well placed to defend their World Cup title, currently leading the way in the CONMEBOL qualification standings.
