'I didn't know I could do that!' Patrick Dorgu reacts to his stunning first goal

Patrick Dorgu volleyed Manchester United to victory over Newcastle with his first goal for the club at Old Trafford last night, and then admitted: ‘I didn’t know I could do that!’

Dorgu switched from left wing-back to right wing as part of a reshuffle by Ruben Amorim, and rewarded the United boss with the decisive goal midway through the first half to fire his team up to fifth place in the table.

‘It was a good hit,’ said Dorgu, who joined United from Lecce in February. ‘I didn't know I could do that, but I was very happy to score my first goal in this stadium as well. It was amazing.

‘I just looked at the ball, saw it drop, and I just hit it. I've been practicing in training, so I think that's what helped me.’

Last month Amorim claimed that he felt the anxiety every time Dorgu touched the ball, but the Denmark international said: ‘I just took what he told me to work on my confidence and stuff. I think I did well today.’

Amorim admitted that United ‘suffered’ in the absence of seven senior players and then lost Mason Mount at half-time.

He said: ‘I had so many games here saying we played very well and didn't get the three points, today was the opposite. I think we suffered together and we managed to win the game.’

Eddie Howe was left disappointed as Newcastle once again struggled to score away from home. ‘We’ve been really flat,’ he said.

‘We’re finding a way to concede goals and we’re not scoring the goals that we should at the other end - it’s a deadly mix for us.’

Meanwhile, United are paying close attention to James Garner's contract situation at Everton as they explore a potential midfield addition next month.
