AFCON to expand to 28 teams and African Nations League will be launched

On March 29, according to L'Équipe, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee meeting held in Cairo, Egypt this Sunday, CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that the format of the Africa Cup of Nations will be reformed, and the number of participating teams will be increased from the current 24 to 28, but the specific details have not yet been announced. Therefore, there is no definite information indicating in which edition the expansion will begin.

Motsepe confirmed that the next AFCON will be held in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2027 as planned, and another event will be held in 2028, at which time the event will be gradually adjusted to a fixed cycle of once every four years.

In addition, Motsepe also stated that from 2029, CAF will launch a national league (Ligue des Nations), a biennial tournament for 16 teams.
