According to the latest report from AS, Manchester City is unlikely to sell Rúben Dias to Real Madrid, who are currently also considering Schlotterbeck and have begun focusing on Boadı for the midfield position.
It is reported that after signing Cucurella, Konate, and Dumfries to strengthen defense, and Bernardo Silva to bolster midfield, the club is working to fulfill Mourinho's transfer priorities. He believes that signing a new center-back and a versatile midfielder capable of influencing the game is essential.
The three center-back candidates are Rúben Dias, Bastoni, and Schlotterbeck, while the midfield options include Matheus Fernandes and Enzo. Mourinho initially sought a player who could operate as both center-back and left-back, with Gvardiol and Calafiori considered. However, Cucurella's move to Real Madrid for 50 million euros eliminated that option.
Mourinho's determination to secure a center-back stems from the team's defensive concerns: Rüdiger is aging, Hincapié is too inexperienced for consistent performance this season, and Militão has a troubling injury record.
Mourinho's first choice remains Rúben Dias. Though Real Madrid considered him before signing Konate, sources indicate his acquisition is now nearly impossible, as Manchester City refuses to sell. Bastoni is another option, but as Inter Milan's most valued player, his 70 million euro release clause is prohibitively expensive.
Schlotterbeck emerges as the most realistic target. His 50 million euro release clause at Borussia Dortmund aligns with his market value, and Real Madrid maintains excellent relations with the German club.
For midfield, Mourinho demands a physically dominant player with excellent passing range and tactical versatility. Enzo is his ideal candidate, but Chelsea seeks to recoup most of the 120 million euros (plus add-ons) they invested in 2023. While Chelsea needs to sell, manager Xabi Alonso considers Enzo integral to the team's system.
Real Madrid has also pursued 21-year-old Matheus Fernandes, a rising Portuguese talent whose omission from the World Cup squad raised eyebrows. After West Ham's relegation, he entered the transfer market, but Manchester United is also competing for his signature. West Ham's asking price is 80 million euros. Notably, his agent Mendes represents both Mourinho and Bernardo Silva, though he maintains strong ties to Manchester United as well.
Given the midfielder's pivotal role, Real Madrid is proceeding cautiously, as preparatory work is largely complete. The World Cup will significantly influence final decisions. Another candidate has emerged: Boadı, who impressed against Brazil.
