On January 26, according to journalist Momar Assane, just one week after the massive controversy sparked by Morocco’s "towel-snatching" incident in the Africa Cup final had yet to subside, a similar farce quickly unfolded again.
Last Sunday, during an African Confederation Cup match at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, Morocco, home team Casablanca Wydad faced off against Maniema Union from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Wydad ultimately won 1–0, but the match drew widespread attention due to a bizarre incident.
Videos filmed by spectators showed that during the game, a home security officer from Casablanca suddenly rushed toward the visitors’ bench area in an attempt to snatch a towel being used by Maniema Union’s goalkeeper. At that moment, the towel was in the hands of Maniema Union’s assistant coach. Fortunately, the assistant reacted swiftly and immediately hid the towel behind the goal, preventing it from being seized on the spot. The security officer was then filmed hastily returning to his own team’s goal area, but the entire episode had already been fully captured and quickly spread across social media platforms.
