Alexander-Arnold caught mocking Man City star moments after Real Madrid win

Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold refused to let his celebrations lie at the final whistle after knocking Manchester City out of the Champions League

If Manchester City's elimination from the Champions League wasn't enough, Trent Alexander-Arnold made things personal. The England full-back was caught on camera mocking opponent Jeremy Doku after the full-time whistle, which has yielded a mixed reaction online.

Real Madrid secured their spot in the last eight of the Champions League with a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday. Vinicius Jr scored twice to complete a 5-1 rout on aggregate and send City packing.

The result was made that much more routine after Bernardo Silva was sent off after only 20 minutes. And Real waltzed through to the quarter-finals at a relative canter after easing Pep Guardiola's side out of the way.

But that wasn't sufficient for Alexander-Arnold, who was matched up against Doku for the entirety of his 83-minute outing. Not that he felt much heat from the Belgian and his jinking methods down the touchline.

The former Liverpool star was dribbled past on only one occasion during the second leg, though it certainly helped Real were doubling and tripling up in man coverage on that flank. That's a number he can feel content with given Doku has had much more success going up against the defender in the past.

The bragging rights remained with Alexander-Arnold on this occasion, however. And the 27-year-old could be seen revelling in his achievement as he spoke with a team-mate (who appeared to be David Alaba) at the full-time whistle.

It remains unknown exactly what Alexander-Arnold said, though it was clear from his body language whom he was imitating. After all, it's difficult to mistake Doku's signature style of attack, interlaced with innumerable feints and quick dips of his shoulders.

Not everyone agreed the Englishman had the right to boast, however, given the history between the two players. And more than one fan pointed out online that Doku broke a 10-year Premier League record by dribbling past the Liverpudlian more than 10 times when they faced off back in 2023.

"The audacity to clown someone who made you the most dribbled player in Premier League history in one game is actually crazy," read one comment on a post showing Alexander Arnold's mocking. Another fan wrote: "Doku must be living rent-free in Trent's head."

Others suggested the scoreline didn't necessarily tell the tale of their battle as a third spectator added: "This would have made sense if Doku didn't create four chances from his wing, including the chance that led to the [Erling] Haaland goal."

City's title prospects have been decimated in the space of only a few days. Saturday's 1-1 draw at West Ham left them nine points off Premier League leaders Arsenal and their European exit means Sunday's League Cup final and the FA Cup are now their only realistic routes to silverware.

Real, meanwhile, are four points behind Barcelona at the head of La Liga and face a difficult Champions League quarter-final, likely to be against Bayern Munich. Alexander-Arnold can only hope his opposite man is more humble in victory than him should Los Blancos fail to win the whole thing.
