According to The Athletic, Canadian captain and Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies will miss Canada's opening World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch announced the news ahead of the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Since arriving at the Canada camp on June 1, Davies' availability has been a topic of discussion. Previously, neither Davies nor Marsch had publicly stated whether the star had recovered from the hamstring injury he sustained in Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 6.

Marsch said on Thursday local time: "We did an MRI on Davies yesterday, and the results showed very positive signs. He is recovering very well and is almost fully recovered. We are preparing to gradually increase the intensity of training. I think he has shown the same strong ability to recover from muscle injuries as always."

Due to a torn cruciate ligament, other injuries, and fatigue issues, Davies has only participated in 2 of Canada's last 21 matches.

Davies did not participate in the first week of Canada's World Cup training camp in Charlotte, North Carolina. After arriving, Davies spent most of his time training alone, accompanied by his independent specialist trainer, Matthias Blankenburg. This arrangement was part of Davies' return-to-play process, agreed upon by Bayern Munich, Davies, and Canada Soccer.

Marsch did not rule out Davies' participation in subsequent group stage matches for Canada.

Marsch said: "I think it's very helpful to have Davies' personal physical therapist here, who can focus on his physical needs every day. So, we are very hopeful that in the coming days and week, we can accelerate his progress and give him the opportunity to contribute to the team very soon."
