Amorim told to make historic move for Liverpool flop to give Man Utd 'swagger'

Manchester United have been urged to make history - by signing Liverpool’s misfiring striker Darwin Nunez.

According to Treble-winning former Old Trafford hit-man Dwight Yorke, the Reds should try to tempt their biggest rivals into selling them the Uruguayan international in the summer.

The last player to move between the two clubs was Phil Chisnall, who left United to sign for Liverpool in a £25,000 deal in April 1964. Now Yorke wants Nunez to bridge the 61-year gap by becoming the man to bring goals to Ruben Amorim’s team.

Yorke said: "I would be brave and take a look at Nunez - if Liverpool make him available. He’s got a little roughness around the edges. United need somebody up there who can be the top man - they’re missing a player who has got that belief and confidence.

"Who has got the swagger to be the main man at Man United? I would take a punt on that guy. He’s still only 25. Nunez has got a physical presence. Jhon Duran, who I told United to go get, has gone to Saudi. You’re not going to get Alexander Isak.

"Nunez could be on the market if Liverpool look to bring in a forward this summer. If they sign one then someone’s got to be offloaded to balance the books. If they’re going to offload Nunez, I will tell United to take a serious look at him."

Nunez could be available at the end of the season after having his head turned by interest from the Saudi Pro League last month. But it would be a brave move to leave Anfield to switch to Old Trafford. The £85million striker joined Liverpool from Benfica in the summer of 2022, but he remains a work in progress.

Nunez has scored just 39 goals in 131 appearances for the Merseysiders and was last week given a public rollocking by boss Arne Slot for his poor reaction to missing a golden chance in the draw at Aston Villa.

But United have big problems up front, with both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both failing to give value on their huge transfer fees.

York, speaking to Casinobeats.com, said: "Even if you’re a prospect, you’ve got to show why you’re a prospect. Hojlund, I’m yet to see anything that suggests he’s the future No 9 for Manchester United. He’s not even close.

"You defend people as best you can. You give people a chance, but he’s been there for nearly two seasons. It’s not going to get any better than that. You’re buying prospects for £72million? That’s insane.”
