Amorim wants change in the transfer market: “We cannot make the same mistakes”

After a difficult start to the season, Manchester United have finally found some consistency under Ruben Amorim.

United have moved up to seventh in the Premier League table and are firmly back in contention for European places. A Boxing Day clash with Newcastle United will be a major test for Amorim’s men but they go into the game without the talismanic Bruno Fernandes after the club captain picked up a soft-tissue injury last weekend.

Speaking ahead of the Newcastle game, Amorim admitted that he is hoping to add new players in the January transfer window but insisted that he would not rush into any short-term signings.

He told Sky Sports: “We can improve, we have space to have more players but we have a plan and we need to bring in players that we know, obviously it is hard to know for sure that everything is going to work.”

“But we need to be certain with the players that we bring in, if we are not sure, if everyone is not aligned, it is better not to bring anyone and work with the players that we have.

With Fernandes out and the likes of Bryan Mbuemo and Amad Diallo unavailable while away at the African Cup of Nations, there will be a temptation to bring in more players to help fill gaps. But Amorim is not looking for any short-term fixes and is eager to avoid making “the same mistakes” that Manchester United has made in the past.

“Maybe I should be different, like so many other managers, but that is my thinking for the club and I think the board thinks that, too,” he explained. “We cannot make the same mistakes we did in the past and we need to survive these moments because we have players coming back from internationals and injury.”
