André Onana: It’s my responsibility, because of me we didn’t win...

Andre Onana stepped forward and took responsibility for Manchester United’s 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich, adding that his start to life at Old Trafford has been nowhere near good enough.

The Cameroon star pitched up at Old Trafford this summer in a £47million move from Inter Milan as successor to David de Gea as No 1.

Conceding three goals in three consecutive games for the first time since 1978 highlights United’s defensive vulnerability right now and the first for Bayern came from a huge error by Onana, who spilled a straightforward shot from Leroy Sane into his net.

‘We didn’t win because of me,’ Onana, who requested to front up to the media after Wednesday’s match, told TNT Sports.

‘We started well but after my mistake we lost control. I’m the one who let the team down. I owe it to the fans to improve.’

Onana wasn’t finished there, adding: ‘This was my worst game. I've got a lot to prove, because to be honest my start with Manchester United is not so good.

‘Today is one of my worst games. It was a big opportunity for us to bounce back from the pressure we’re facing, but it’s tough. We have to be together.’

Erik ten Hag praised his goalkeeper for fronting up for his mistake but stressed that progress for United will be down to the team as a whole, not just one individual.

Former Manchester United defender-turned-pundit Rio Ferdinand paid his ‘respect’ to Onana in the aftermath.

‘I respect that [to front up to the media],’ he said.

‘I've lost and refused to speak to the media at times. That showed good character and showed he's made of the right stuff.’

United started the brighter in Munich and were unlucky not to go ahead when Christian Eriksen was foiled from close range.

From there Bayern settled and were given a helping hand en route to victory when Onana inexplicably failed to keep out Sane’s stinging low drive.

Serge Gnabry added a second before half-time while goals from Harry Kane and Mathys Tel cancelled out Rasmus Hojlund’s effort, as well as a late brace from Casemiro.
