Andrea Pirlo appears set to be appointed as Roberto Mancini’s assistant in charge of the Italy national team.
According to news agency Ansa, successful talks have taken place between the 2006 World Cup winning midfielder and the FIGC, with a deal very close to being agreed.
39-year-old Pirlo retired from playing late last year after ending his spell at Major League Soccer side New York City.
As well as winning the World Cup with his country, he enjoyed highly distinguished spells with both Milan and Juventus, winning a combined six Scudetti, two Champions Leagues and two Coppa Italia titles.
Ansa says the only obstacle remaining is ensuring Pirlo can still fulfil his role as a Sky pundit covering this season’s Champions League.
However, that is believed to be a formality and Pirlo is set to complete the make up of Mancini’s backroom staff as he seeks to revive the Nazionale’s fortunes.

What really surprises me is that usually the older generation are unable to speak English (for any non-english speaking countries), however, a lot of older Italian players are able to speak English really well - Buffon & Pirlo surprised me. I'm not mocking anyone, but respect to these guys who probably never needed to speak the language (apart from Pirlo since he's in the MLS), and yet speak really well! Even Conte spoke really well & Sarri already gave a great english interview for Chelsea. I remember reports about Conte studying very hard in the spring/summer before moving to Chelsea He wasn't the best when he first joined either and he did have a lot of time to learn before joining because he was announced way before he could join. So yes, there's that but we had people like Costa who lives in England and communicated through sign language. Tevez was in England for 8 years iirc and didn't speak a word of English. That was what I was hinting at mostly, didn't mean to hate on anyone, just wanted to point that out.

He retired in October, not a few years ago. I'm well aware, but he really left it behind in Italy. Ik. MLS isn't real football You're right

Apparently this is for Sky Sports Italy but I was wondering if anyone from the UK knows - do BT still do that European Football review show? And does Sky still do Revista de la liga? They used to be my favourite way to catch up on European football but I swear they've disappeared.

Scholes, legend of as player but terrible pundit. He has as sounessesque outlook on today's football, albeit to a lesser extent. Actually enjoy Henry's punditry though.

Instead of putting him in the studio, I'd love it if the pundits were to cut to a lovely vineyard somewhere in rural Italy, where we see Pirlo picking grapes and sampling some fantastic wine and cheese. Once he's taken a sip of his wine, and has relaxed into a chair, he then provides us with his thoughts on the game.

Scholars is a decent pundit, way better than Henry. Henry is just Alan Shearer v2. Says the most obvious shite, with little useful insight Dunni man, perhaps I need to see more of both. Scholes probably 2nd fave player of all time though!

I personally saw him in NYC in the corner of a high end sushi restaurant a few years back. So for me it would be ‘cool ass dude flirting with his girlfriend in the corner of an expensive ass sushi restaurant.’

Great Choice ...Italy will need his services going forward... Next in line will be Buffon... Their skills and experience will matter very much for the Italian football
