Argentina are on the brink of World Cup exit following a disgraceful display against Croatia, with Willy Caballero handing Ante Rebic a gift from heaven and Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic extending the lead late on. By the way, Lionel Messi went missing - the whole match.
Match Events
4' CHANCE! Perisic's shot saved
Perisic cuts in and spears a low shot in; Caballero gets his fingertips to it and pushes it away for a corner.
12' Messi inches away from providing a goalscoring touch
The Argentina captain can't get the end of his foot on a chipped pass eight yards out from the Croatian goal and can only watch as it bounces into the hands of Subasic.
13' Lovren blocks Meza's goal-bound strike
Superb block by Lovren! Meza arrives on the back of a cut-back pass from Salvio in the middle of the box and lashes it towards goal, with the defender getting his body in the way in time to deflect it.
21' Acuna's cross hits the bar
Acuna crosses in from the left is hooked wide of the mark - and hits the crossbar instead. An almost accidental score for the Argentina man there.
29' Enzo Perez misses an empty net!
With practically an empty net in front of him, Perez pulls it wide at the near-left post. That could come back to haunt Argentina; a golden chance goes begging.
32' WHAT A CHANCE! Mandzukic's header wide out
Vrsaljko delivers a cross in off the right wing but Mandzukic can only land a glance with his diving header from six yards out on the left, sticking it wide of the near post.
53' GOAL! Argentina 0-1 Croatia (Rebić)
That is an absolute howler of a goalkeeping error from Willy Caballero! Supplied a back-pass from Mercado, he mistimes his kick and chips it high - straight into the path of Rebic.
The Croatian winger who volleys it at close range into the top right corner. Argentina have just shot themselves in the foot.
63' Messi's point blank shot blocked by Rakitic
Meza and Messi miss on the goal-line! Superb scrambling defence from Subasic and Rakitic deny close-range efforts to scuff the ball over at the left post after Higuain puts a lovely flat ball in from the left wing.
80' GOAL! Argentina 0-2 Croatia (Modrić)
That was pure class from the Real Madrid man as, played a square ball by Brozovic out on the right, launches a beautiful right-footed effort that curls around Tagliafico and nestles in at the right post.
Croatia wheel away in wild celebration; halfway up the field, Lionel Messi stares with misery at the turf. Argentina are heading for defeat.
85' Yellow Card! N. Otamendi booked
Otamendi kicks the ball at Rakatic's head from point blank range, which leads to a bust up from both sides. The Manchester City defender gets only a yellow card afterwards.
90' GOAL! Argentina 0-3 Croatia (Rakitic)
From the corner down the other end of the field, Rakitic, Kovacic and Mandzukic break down the middle of the park with a leisurely pace.
It's Rakitic who puts the first shot on Caballero, saved by the keeper - but the ball deflects back to Kovacic who simply squares it back to the Barcelona man to clip home. What a showing from Croatia.
Match Report
Willy Caballero's clanger presented Ante Rebic with an opportunity he could not refuse, and Croatia rolled on to a stunning 3-0 victory over Argentina that sent them into the last 16 of the World Cup.
Jorge Sampaoli's side produced an abysmal second-half display that severely damages their hopes of following Croatia out of Group D, with Caballero's stray pass to Gabriel Mercado that was volleyed home by Ante Rebic in the 53rd minute proving the turning point.
Any hopes of a late Argentina fightback were extinguished 10 minutes from time as the irrepressible Luka Modric whipped a fine strike into the bottom-right corner from just outside the penalty area.
Argentina had all but given up by the closing stages and they were punished further in stoppage time when Ivan Rakitic tapped in from close range with barely a defender in sight.
All eyes were on Lionel Messi before the game after his saved penalty in the South Americans' opening 1-1 draw with Iceland and, once again, he was a shadow of the player that has starred for Barcelona.
Messi cut an isolated figure throughout and was unable to rouse his side in the closing stages, leaving them in danger of needing a win and a swing in goal difference to reach the knockout stages.

Yes Sampaoli should be fired. He started the mistakes for the very beginning. Huigain shouldn’t have been picked but Icardi should have been there in Russia and even started instead of Aguero. The formation doesn’t even make sense, there is no connection between the defense and the attack because the midfield doesn’t even exist. Your main weakness is defense and yet he plays 3 in the back and the wing backs has never been seen defending. Where is that line in front of the defense so you can control the game? When was Messi when the Croatians surrounded Otamendi when he fouled Rakitic. You have a star player dybala in the bench, in what world does he belongs even there?! He should be the second player named on to start. Just full and full of mistakes. The bible is a shorter book than his mistakes if written in a book. In the last 10 min ALL of the Argentina players shouldn’t even be wearing that kit you didn’t even try! They should be ashamed of themselves

Where was Messi the supposedly all time greatest player ? Why did his club teammate Rakitic do more than him? Why hasn’t he scored a goal yet this World Cup yet he is better than Ronaldo who has 4? What a game for Croatia, they are definitely dark horses this game. Modric + Rakitic is just splendid. Argentina...... bye-bye

Messi is an exceptional footballer, but he can not do everything by himself unlike the Real Goat Ronaldo who struggle for balls and build himself up by himself. In football, In football as for "Messi he needs help from his teammates to succeed but in club and Country." ❗️None of the Argentina players gave Messi more than 2 passes in the first 45". Ronaldo is d Magical Goat🙌🙌🙌 Ronaldo 4 - 0 Messi

Was I the only one thinking that RAKITAC was hoping for Messi to score the whole game😂😂 so he can say “MESSI IS THE GOAT, HE JUST CANNOT BE STOPPED”. Maradona was sniffing Messi’s shirt as damn cocaine😂. Will this be Messi’s retirement from international now?

The coach did not invite Icardi because of his issues with Messi and that is a fact. so Messi dictates for the coach and so should be blamed for making himself a God in Argentina. The same reason why Dybala was on the bench....the little man thinks he's the greatest so if the team doesn't perform he must swallow his pride and take the blame, finish!!!!!

What we learned from this match? Messi is not CR7 that he can carry his team alone. Sampaoli has to make permanent formation or Argentina is finished. Dybala has to come in starting lineup. Defence is playing like Amateur. Maradona can still play. So Huguain out and Maradona in!

You know? I hate myself sometimes. There comes a moment when I want to troll Messi so hard because of his fans, but when I see him suffering this way, I swear I get upset too. Head up, champion. You'll come back, that's what champions do. 👏

WHAT WE KNOW! 1) ARGENTINA performance worse than Nigeria so the best they can have is a DRAW which still translates into an unprecedented EXIT! 2) ALL NOW depends on Iceland if they beat Nigeria with four points in the bag, a draw with marauding Croatians not a far fetched ambition knowing Croatians will be torn into preserving the energy while topping the group 3) If Nigeria wins Croatians will have to breath a lot easier because most unlikely a team they beat can surpass them on points.

It's really the group of death. There wasn't any clear favorites to progress, not like group B. Iceland proved from euro 2016 that they can match any team.....even Ronaldo couldn't buy a goal against them in 2016. Croatia has extraordinary talent, experience and is very technical. Nigeria, the strongest African side. Argentina, a big name with a very special player but with no cohision and has a shitty defence. Argentina is lucky to have Messi, or else they wouldn't even qualify for the tournament. Messi's the one who sent them to the world cup on the last day, with his hatrik, but he has no help and their style of play only invite oppositions to pressure thier defense. They can never soak up pressure and play counter attack - that would be a disaster because thier defenders and midfielder aren't desciplin enough to defend. They went for all out attack in this game and forgetting that the important thing is to avoid defeat - a draw against Croatia wouldn't be a bad thing - the coach should be blamed for this.

I knew Argentina would hace a difficult time. A Croatia that plays very good and has one of the best midfields An Iceland that has nothing to lose and is good flying over expectations A Nigeria that doesn't give up easily

my heart wasn't just at ease with the goalkeeper from the start... and as for the coach how can he put most of the best players on the bench and expect Argentina to win. I mean Messi can't do all the work alone he doesn't play all positions in the field... I don't know if the goalkeeper and coach's brain divorced their heads... #Argentina #messi where he is I am

The performance was absolutely terrible. I don’t know what is going on? Is it Caballero, is it Aguero, Is it Otamendi or is it Messi? We can still catch up if we win against Nigeria cmon!!! But that match was played terribly from Argentina. Caballero needs improvement. Maybe start Guzman ahead of him or any other goalkeeper
