Argentina defeated Venezuela 3-0 with a double from Messi in the South American qualifiers.
Match Report
Lionel Messi scored twice to help Argentina to a 3-0 win over Venezuela in his final World Cup qualifier at home on Wednesday.
Argentina have already qualified for next year's World Cup but put a dent in Venezuela's hopes of a first appearance at the major tournament to cap Messi's time in Buenos Aires on a high.
Julian Alvarez almost gave the hosts an early lead from Messi's pullback, as he rifled a first-time effort on goal from the edge of the box, but Rafael Romo was equal to it.
Moments later, Cristian Romero then had a back-post header ruled out for offside before Messi found the breakthrough in the 39th minute, beating Romo with a delightful lob from the middle of the box.
Argentina pushed for a second goal after the break, seeing chances go to waste, as Thiago Almada, under no pressure, sliced a volley well wide of the near post.
Lautaro Martinez eventually gave the hosts a two-goal cushion in the 76th minute, stooping low to meet Nico Gonzalez's low cross to send a header in off the goalkeeper.
Messi got his second just four minutes later; he did not need to break stride as he rushed into the box, turning Almada's low cross into the bottom-left corner first time. He was then denied a hat-trick on his send-off, with a lovely chip over Romo ruled out for offside.
Argentina are still top of the qualifying group, with a 10-point lead over Brazil, but Venezuela remain seventh, now seven points behind Paraguay, in the last automatic qualification spot.
Data Debrief: Messi steals the show
Argentina will have been determined to send their talismanic captain off with a win after he confirmed he would be playing his last World Cup qualifier on home soil.
But Messi more than played his part too, leading by example, as he had seven of their 17 attempts (four on target), and contributed 0.75 to their expected goals (xG) tally of 1.6.
Venezuela, by contrast, did not get any of their five shots on target (0.32 xG) and were limited to long-range efforts, with none of their shots coming inside the box.
Messi has scored eight goals in World Cup qualifying, more than any other player in South America, helping to extend Argentina's unbeaten streak to six matches.

‼️Very touching words from an Argentina fan: "The greatest player in history is leaving us. We love Diego, without a doubt, but Messi is everything to us. I've been crying for three days." 🥹🇦🇷

GOAT Messi . He doesn't need anything to prove himself to be the best. He has already achieved everything he wanted. So there is no argument left to decide who is the GOAT .

Messi: "It makes sense that the next World Cup might be out of my plans because of my age." "I always try to be honest with myself and to feel comfortable. When I do, I enjoy every moment, but if not, I prefer not to take part." "I haven’t made a final decision yet about the 2026 World Cup." "I will continue the season game by game, then go through preseason, and with six months left we’ll see how I feel."

Leo Messi on his future and the world cup next year : "Same as I said before about the World Cup that I don’t think I’ll play another...Because of my age, the most logical thing is that I won’t make it. But well, we’re almost there so I’m excited and motivated to play it. Like I always say, I go day by day, match by match. That’s it taking it day by day, going by how I feel. "Day by day trying to feel good and above all, being honest with myself. When I feel good, I enjoy it, but when I don’t, honestly, I don’t have a good time, so I prefer not to be there if I don't feel good. So we’ll see. I haven’t made a decision about the World Cup. "Match by match, I’ll finish the season, then I’ll have preseason, and there will be six months left. So we’ll see how I feel. Hopefully I’ll have a good preseason in 2026 and finish this MLS season well and then I'll decide." Lionel Messi is cutting onions.
