Armenia 0-5 Portugal: Ronaldo nets brace with 139th & 140th international goals

Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 139th and 140th international goals in his country's 5-0 World Cup qualifying win against Armenia on Saturday evening.

Ronaldo scored Portugal's second goal of the game in Armenia as the Nations League winners got their World Cup qualifying campaign underway.

After Joao Felix had given Portugal an early lead, Ronaldo was on hand to double his side's advantage as he nonchalantly prodded home an inviting cross from Chelsea's Pedro Neto.

Joao Cancelo made it three just after the half-hour mark, before Ronaldo unleashed a powerful effort to make it 4-0 a minute after the restart.

The Al-Nassr forward was withdrawn just before the hour, while Joao Felix grabbed his second to complete a routine 5-0 victory for Portugal.

The leading goalscorer in international football history is now 26 goals clear of his rival Lionel Messi at the top of list as his remarkable international career shows no signs of slowing down.

Ronaldo is also the player with the most appearances in international football after making his 222nd appearance for Portugal this weekend.

The Portugal captain will be hopeful of leading the line for his country at next year's World Cup despite the fact that he will be 41 in February.

The World Cup remains a trophy that has escaped Ronaldo's clutches and he will be looking to add to his international honours after winning Euro 2016 and the Nations League on two occasions.

The second goal against Armenia was the 942nd strike of a scintillating career that could end with him reaching an unprecedented tally of 1,000 goals.
