Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool facing new deadline after late summer transfers completed

Transfer deadline day saw several late deals done across the Premier League - and nine clubs across the top flight now face another deadline just 48 hours later.

The nine Premier League clubs competing in UEFA competitions this season have until 11pm tonight (Wednesday, September 2) to register their squads for the relevant league phases.

That includes Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in the Champions League, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Sunderland in the Europa League and Brighton & Hove Albion in the Conference League.

All nine teams can include up to 25 players on their list, while at least two of them that they name must be goalkeepers.

A minimum of eight must also be 'locally trained players'. At most, half of that octet can be 'association-trained players'.

As such, at least four must be 'club-trained players'. UEFA defines them as players who were registered with the club for three entire seasons or 36 months between the ages of 15 and 21.

'Association-trained players' are those who have been registered at one or multiple clubs from the same association between those same ages and for the same time period. Not registering at least eight 'locally trained players' reduces the maximum number of players a club can then register.

Villa also face further restrictions. UEFA fined them £19million for a significant breach of their squad cost rule in 2025.

They are not permitted to register any new players unless their list balance is positive. For the balance to be positive, their new signing costs must be lower than their savings from player sales.

Looking only at reported initial transfer fees, Villa spent around £250million this summer on new players but recouped over £300million sales. Therefore, it appears they should have a positive balance and be able to register their new players.

Villa made two deadline-day signings: Ibrahim Mbaye and Taylor Harwood-Bellis. Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, Leon Goretzka, Matteo Ruggeri, Nicolas Jackson and Zion Suzuki have also signed this summer.

Manchester City, meanwhile, must register Tuesday's most expensive signing, Enzo Fernandez, as well as Iliman Ndiaye.

Palace and Sunderland were two of deadline day's busiest clubs, each announcing two arrivals in the early hours of this morning.

Dario Osorio and Quinten Timber, twin brother of Arsenal's Jurrien, both joined the Eagles from Midtjylland and Marseille, respectively. Ben Chilwell and Honest Ahanor have also come in to bolster their backline.

As for the Black Cats, they eventually signed Malick Fofana from Lyon after a deadline day saga for the ages. Juan Riquelme Angulo and Kevin Danso from Tottenham Hotspur also arrived.
