Mikel Arteta faces an injury crisis ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash against Wolves with Declan Rice among multiple players doubtful after missing the midweek Champions League win
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could have Declan Rice back in the fold for Saturday's Premier League meeting with Wolves after the midfielder sat out the Champions League victory over Club Brugge. Rice had been managing a calf issue sustained during the Brentford triumph, but was considered ready enough to take part in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
After missing training sessions with his colleagues earlier in the week, he didn't make the trip to Belgium and was absent from Wednesday night's success. Mikel Merino slotted into midfield to cover for Rice, linking up with Martin Zubimendi and Martin Odegaard in the centre of the pitch.
Nevertheless, Arteta has indicated he's hopeful the England international will be available to face Wolves. "Let's see how he goes today, he was ill," Arteta said. "Normally in a few days, but let's see how he gets on."
Rice isn't the only Arsenal player entering the weekend with question marks, as five defenders could potentially miss out. Jurrien Timber was another unexpected omission from the midweek victory after sustaining a problem against Villa.
The former Ajax defender made the journey to Belgium but was excluded from the squad with no clarity on whether he'll be involved on Saturday night. "It depends on how he feels today," Arteta explained. "It was a knock that he picked [up] and he wasn't feeling comfortable." Timber's unavailability has compounded Arteta's fitness concerns, with William Saliba also uncertain.
The French international has been sidelined since sustaining an injury prior to the stalemate at Chelsea last month. Arteta had previously suggested his return was merely a matter of "days" away, yet he was absent from the last two matches.
"We have to wait and see, yesterday he didn't train." Arteta commented on Saliba. "We have an extra day, let's see if he can be available."
Leandro Trossard also sat out the victory in Belgium after a recurring calf injury flared up again. "Leo again picked up another knock in an area where he had the issue, and I don't expect that it's going to be long, but unfortunately, he cannot be here," Arteta stated ahead of Wednesday night.
When questioned about the Belgian's availability for the Wolves match, Arteta responded: "Again, it's a matter of days." One player who is certain to miss the weekend is Max Dowman. The 15 year old sustained an ankle ligament injury during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Manchester United last week.
It remains unclear how long the young prodigy will be out, but he was replaced by Gabriel Jesus in Arsenal's Champions League squad this week. "With Max, unfortunately, he picked up an injury last weekend, and he had to come off, so we did some scans and he is going to be out for week," Arteta elaborated.
In other news, Gabriel Magalhaes continues to be unavailable after suffering an adductor problem during the international break. Cristhian Mosquera will be sidelined until next year due to a 'complicated' ankle injury.
There's no set return date for the summer recruit, but speculation suggests a layoff of six to eight weeks. "He's going to be out for weeks unfortunately, it's much more than what we expected," Arteta revealed. "But the player was feeling it, so he's going to be out for weeks."
Forward Kai Havertz is still on the mend from a knee injury sustained in August. In early December, Arteta confirmed that the German's recovery was just a "matter of weeks" away.

I wonder if, after playing 90 minutes in Belgium in midweek, Martin Zubimendi might be earmarked for some rest today, and if Timber is back at the heart of the defence, Declan Rice could slot in there, or there might be more minutes for Christian Norgaard in his more natural position. Further forward, is today a chance to deploy Eberechi Eze and Martin Odegaard together? It’s something Arteta tried when we played West Ham back in early October, but it was cut short by injury to the captain. He clearly wanted to see how it would work, and it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the case again today. Up front, you could probably make a reasonable argument for Noni Madueke to keep his place after two goals in midweek. This might be about the last real chance to give Bukayo Saka a rest, but that’s really not something the manager is inclined to do generally. Perhaps the double from Madueke in the Champions League gives him that confidence, and on the other side, if there is no Trossard, then it will be Gabriel Martinelli who keeps his place.

Arteta's duty is to fashion out a system that will bring out the best in Gyokeres but he has not done that since August. We have a striker that scored 50+ goals last season and Arteta is still playing his 4-3-3 system that gives no service to the striker whenever he plays. How can a natural striker be on the bench while a defensive midfielder is playing top 9? The last time Gyokeres played with 4-2-3-1 he as lone striker against Athletico Madrid, he scored 2 goals! Arteta should make the team play to the strength of Gyokeres like Pep. did to Haaland That is what astute Managers do!

Please encourage arsenal players to be weak in the face of injury. Any small injuries, they should fall for it.

Don't be surprised if Arteta rushes back Rice and others who didn't play on Wednesday for Wolves match. He is poor in squad, team and game management. He loads his favourites with 5, 6,matches until they get injured with Nwaneri and others on the bench without minutes on the pitch.

Can’t wait for Havertz to return to the 1st team squad. I wonder who Arteta selects who plays up top. He really loves Havertz, he has stated that. He is a false 9 as is Merino. Jesus is technically superior to the other 3, and gives you the unpredictable. Gyrolokes is a basic 9, he needs goals A.S.A.P. He lacks service,Odegaard’s goals end assists has dropped alarmingly in the last 2 years. Eze i believe would be a better 10, he gets goals and he is also very creative with excellent vision. The striker situation could definite our season. I hope he doesn’t go with his favourites.

If Arteta had rotated more when he had more players at his disposal, we would not be in our current situation. Now that the so called squad players are doing well, he has left himself in a position where he can’t rotate as much, which will lead to more injuries and fatigued players. He didn’t use his squad correctly in the early season, and are now paying the price for it.

Surely there is a problem Arteta has to sort out , it is not possible that all these players get injured from time to time , there must be something that courses the injuries and the question is why is it mostly happening to Arsenal ?

Sorry for Arsenal, injury is now affecting them at the moment. I hope the players recover in time especially especially for January to February busy schedule
