Chelsea signed Morgan Rogers for £117 million, breaking the British player transfer record. Arsenal valued Morgan Rogers at £80 million but could not convince the winger to join.
After more than two years of pursuit, Chelsea finally brought Morgan Rogers to Stamford Bridge. According to The Athletic, Chelsea reached an agreement with Aston Villa to sign the England international for £117 million.
The deal was finalized within 48 hours. Chelsea officially began negotiations with Villa and the player's representatives on Thursday, the day after England's semi-final loss to Argentina. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso called Rogers on Friday to explain his tactical vision, and personal terms were agreed that same day.
The deal involved high-level coordination, including club owners and sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart. Captain Reece James spoke with Rogers at the England training camp, and teammate Cole Palmer also contacted him. These actions signaled Chelsea's determination to sign him. Rogers was impressed by the speed at which Chelsea moved, and the deal was completed by Saturday.
Rogers was a target for several top clubs domestically and internationally. Last season, he contributed 14 goals and 11 assists for Villa, establishing himself as a key transfer target. However, with five years remaining on his Villa contract, convincing the club to sell was difficult. For weeks, Arsenal appeared to be frontrunners, but Rogers ultimately chose to join Chelsea, Arsenal's London derby rivals.
One of Chelsea's top priorities this summer was to sign a versatile attacker capable of playing multiple positions. Rogers was the first choice from the outset. Chelsea and Alonso value his ability to play on the left wing, right wing, as a No. 10, a false nine, and in midfield, along with his physical attributes and attitude. Rogers is considered humble and adaptable to the dressing room. While Villa was disappointed to lose him, they praised his character and potential to become a key leader. Chelsea hopes he will form one of Europe's most potent attacking units alongside Palmer, João Pedro, and Estêvão.
During Friday's call, Alonso emphasized his desire to sign Rogers since taking over in May and detailed his tactical plans. Rogers felt a connection with the Spanish coach, impressed by his reputation and genuine pursuit. A source told The Athletic: "After that conversation, he felt that Xabi Alonso really meant what he said."
Chelsea had been interested in Rogers before he joined Villa from Middlesbrough for £8 million in January 2024, particularly after he scored against Chelsea in a League Cup match that month. Villa's Director of Football Operations, Damian Vidagany, led those negotiations. Middlesbrough included a 20% sell-on clause in the deal.
Chelsea's interest was reignited in January 2025, but Villa refused to sell. Manager Unai Emery viewed Rogers as the club's best player and considered him among the Premier League's top five. Last November, the England international signed his third new contract in less than two years, reflecting Villa's commitment to keeping him amid the club's struggles to strengthen its attacking options.

These ridiculous transfer fees for English players is getting out of hand! This is becoming dangerous for the transfer market in general. Unnecessary Inflation of prices can take you on a journey of no return!

Rice was our priority and we needed him. and he justified the money. Rogers is a good player and I don't think he is missing player in arsenal squad because eze can play the same position as Rogers

It doesn't matter, if a club has money to buy players no matter the price, let them buy, why is it a pain to others when they don't.

My own valuation is between 55m and 60m. I am very proud 👏 as an Arsenal fan that Arsenal realized the over valuation and stayed away. Kudos to Berta for his shrewdness.

Chelsea just wasted money. He is not that good for the price they paid. This is panic paying. Arsenal valuation to me was even more. 50 to 60m is his price tag.
