Arsenal announce that Mikel Arteta is joining the club as new head coach on Sunday.
Mikel, a former club captain, played for Arsenal for five seasons from 2011 to 2016 and has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract.
Mikel’s coaching team will be announced as soon as possible.
Josh Kroenke, speaking on behalf of the Arsenal board and our owners Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing Mikel back to Arsenal.
He knows our expectations and those of our fans around the world are high and we are confident he can play a lead role in taking the club back to the levels we all demand.
Head of football Raul Sanllehi said: “We met several top-class candidates and Mikel stood out to every single one of us as the perfect person for us.
“Mikel understands Arsenal Football Club and what it means to our fans around the world. We look forward to him getting down to work and bringing the best out of our squad as we work to get our season back on track.
“I must also pay tribute to Freddie Ljungberg for his hard work and leadership. Together with Per Mertesacker, he has done a vital job for us in difficult circumstances. Freddie and Per are important parts of the Arsenal family and care deeply for this club.”

Things for Arsenal fans to be excited about. 1.Mikel Arteta can speak multiple languages frequently like,so language will not be a barrier this time 2.He used to be the captain of Arsenal so he bring leadership qualities which Arsenal lacks in the dressing room 3.He is a graduate from La Masia and has played under Wenger and was assistant to Pep,surely he is going to play good attacking football 4.He has played in PL for 11 years and knows the league well unlike Emery. 5.He was part of coaching setup that won many trophies in last 3 years,and as a captain he has lifted FA cup so he can bring winning mentality to Arsenal 6.Pep Guardiola trusted him to be his No2 when he had no experience in coaching before,definitely he must have saw something in him.As Erik Tan Haag another person who was trusted by Pep as his assistent is having a good career suggests Mikel is quite talented. 7.Poch played with him as a player when he was at PSG,and even he said he is going to be a brilliant manager.Poch,Pep and Wenger who worked with him closely believes he is going to have a bright future,not many people gets so much praise.
