Some Manchester United fans have called for the club to mark the three-year anniversary of Jose Mourinho's Chelsea sacking by relieving him of his duties at Old Trafford and showing him the door.

Mourinho is a manager on the edge following a humilating 3-1 defeat to bitter rivals Liverpool - a result which put them 19 points behind the league leaders at the halfway point in the season.

Disgruntled United fans have had enough of the current situation, and took to social media to vent their fury and ask the club to follow Chelsea's actions before them and get rid of the Portuguese boss.

As the statistic of Mourinho's anniversary sacking started doing the rounds on Twitter, one fan responded: 'Can we make that happen again today? I'm hoping for a Christmas miracle that I don't think will happen.'

Another added: 'Time for history to repeat itself. Manchester United board wake up and do what needs to be done for our club.'

Prior to United's Anfield demise, they were defeated in midweek by Spanish opposition Valencia in the Champions League group stage - surrendering the opportunity to win the group as a result.

Following Monday's draw the Red Devils have been pitted against Paris Saint Germain in the last 16 round, though fans greeted this news with similar measures of pessimism.

United return to domestic action against newly promoted Cardiff City on Saturday evening, who have recently built up a streak of form following a poor start to the season.

Mourinho's side will see the fixture as a must-win if they are to retain hope of finishing the season in a Champions League position, as they currently sit eight points adrift of fifth-placed Arsenal.

Home ties against Huddersfield and Bournemouth then follow for United, taking them into the new year period.
