The publication of Lionel Messi's most recent contract at Barcelona has shocked the footballing world, with the intricate details of a contract being like nothing else we've ever seen in the sport, and as such Real Madrid have suspicions that it has been in breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP rules for a number of years.
Neymar's contract with Paris Saint-Germain and Cristiano Ronaldo's agreement with Juventus are known to be two of the biggest contracts handed out in recent years, but the value of those deals doesn't even come close to what Barcelona agreed to pay the Argentine.
It seems now that we have a good explanation on just why Los Cules are in such dire fiscal straits, especially if they were paying other star players high wages in accordance with the limit set by their offer to Messi.
El Mundo revealed the numbers behind Messi's deal at the Camp Nou, although it is still due to expire in June 2021.
In the UEFA and LaLiga meetings on economic control measures, which many clubs actually despise, there was a clamour from leaders of other clubs to look into Barcelona's financial dealings in the Josep Maria Bartomeu era.
They didn't understand how Barcelona could be within FFP regulations, but be struggling so badly financially, with the full scale of those issues now made clear by the fact the words Barcelona and bankruptcy are commonly spoken together.
Real Madrid have looked at Monday's shock reveal and feel vindicated in their long-held belief that Messi's contract was in severe breach of FFP rules.
For years, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has done his best to ensure Los Blancos keep their feet on the ground financially by living within their means and following FFP regulations.
This is why we've not seen the blockbuster contracts handed out, or the aggressive transfer market policy which had previously been a hallmark of Florentino's time as president.
Los Merengues have always asked UEFA and LaLiga to ensure that the rules are respected by everyone, and they are positive that they have always themselves done just that.
Real Madrid lived through a similarly difficult situation to what Barcelona are currently dealing with at the moment, with regards to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Cristiano spoke in 2012 about wanting to leave and this resulted in a new contract a while later, however when he did so again in 2018, his rumoured demands of a 30 million euro net salary were not met.
Real Madrid were clear with Cristiano; they couldn't reach that number and nor would they, especially after those in power at the club had been assessing the economic situation in football for a number of years.
They had bent over backwards to keep their players happy and stay within the rules of FFP, and it resulted in fewer transfer deals in key positions, something which only began to impact the club when Cristiano left for Turin.
The way in which Los Blancos managed the Cristiano situation with a calm resolve has ultimately allowed them to survive the financial calamity that COVID-19 has brought to elite-level football.
Cristiano was sold to Juventus, which brought in valuable funds and took away their biggest contractual drain on resources.
Now, fans will argue that the spirit of their Champions League-winning teams was also lost that day, but it stands to reason that it's better for Real Madrid to lose a battle than a war, especially after such sustained success under Zinedine Zidane.

don't bite more than you can chew, if a player is demanding huge wages more than the club can afford just let him go.

when I see comments like "sO wHaT hE DeSeRvEd iT." I can only laugh because at the end of the day a player will wither away but the club will remain. Barcelona as a club have gone above and beyond for Messi and people can only side with messi??? how ilogical is that. Remember that Messi was a skinny undersized kid who no one wanted yet Barca took him in DEVELOPED him into the player he is now. I can bet you anything he would be the person he is today without Barca. He owes so much to Barca. and I am saying this as a Madrid fan. Barca deserve more from Messi. sure he "carried" them, but its not like within these years barca where withholding his wages. no they kept paying him and upgrading his contract to Messi's liking. Sure Barca fucked up in how they went about things but let's remember that It truly was not Barcelona the club that Messi had beef with but the last president Bartomeu. Barca as a whole have given everything for and more that Messi could ask for.

Barcelona is the most corrupt club in the world. They always find a way to shift their blame on someone

FFP is most about buying players from other clubs not much to do with what a club pays its players.
So if you buy a player for 20 M£ and pay him a salary of 5M£ a week and go in debt that is not breaking the rules. To avoid all this vague rules which The European football authorities issued to earn money from those clubs that presumed to have Brocken it, let it be free for all, if the Glaziers or Abromavich or the Shieks want to spend billion let them do that. It will be good for all footballers and football in general

they said cr7 loved money that's why he left Madrid but today we know why messi can't leave Barcelona..he's holding the club to financial hostage even as the club in going into bankruptcy..he still held them. the secrecy in Barca is coming to limelight small small.

Barcelona was Governed by fools , if all these was on ground ( the debt ) , why ddnt they sell messi on his last year like Realmadrid dis with cr7 , now is gonna leave for free . They could easily have raked in €250m from Messi's Sale This is Bad Management , Bertomeu really destroyed Barcelona , but I believe in remedies not complains, Barca has to let messi go and start selling some key players to reduce their salary wage limit and raise funds (Coutinho / Dembele / Umtiti / Pique and Sergio Bousquets), while young academy players are upgraded to the senior Team Permanently . Trincao , Pedri , Puig , Alana , Ansu Fati , Firpo , Todibo , Araujo , Dest , De Jong along side some experienced players like Griezmann, Jordi Alba , Lenglet , Sergi Roberto , Pjanic , Ter Stegen and Braithwaite can pilot the team back to greatness. Remember Ac Milan once did the same by letting go of all their star players to rebuild a new team , it took them a while but now they are leading the Group table after a hard work

Are you f**kin dumb..Perez literally said Cr7 left Madrid because they refused to give him the money(30m) he wanted😒 Messi tried to force a move from Barca knowing that he'd miss out on the 65 mill on his running contract
