Manchester United were "wrong" to let Romelu Lukaku go in 2019 according to Ashley Young, who has backed his ex-team-mate to thrive at Chelsea after re-signing for the west London outfit.
United spent £75 million ($104m) to sign Lukaku from Everton in 2017, only to sell him to Inter after just two full seasons at Old Trafford.
The Belgium international struggled for consistency during his time with the Red Devils, but scored 64 goals in 85 appearances for the Nerazzurri while helping them win their first Serie A crown in 11 years with Young present in San Siro to witness his return to form.
Young, who left Old Trafford to join Inter in January last year before signing for Aston Villa on a free transfer earlier this summer, believes United were too rash in deciding to offload Lukaku, who he is confident will deliver the goods for Chelsea as they aim to fight for the Premier League title in 2021-22.
“I’m so happy for him,” the former Red Devils full-back told The Guardian. “It was the wrong decision for United to let him go. To join him at Inter and see how well he did there was fantastic.
"I don’t know whether he thinks he has a point to prove [in the Premier League] but I don’t see it like that: his record speaks for itself. He scored a lot of goals at United and everywhere else.
"I hope he does really well at Chelsea – just as long as he doesn’t turn up against Villa!”
Lukaku scored 28 goals across all competitions in his first year at United, but they ultimately finished the 2017-18 campaign without silverware.
The Red Devils' trophyless drought continued the following season too, and the forward fell down the squad pecking order following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as manager, adding just 15 more goals to his tally before being shipped off to Inter.
Young went onto express how much he enjoyed his 18-month stint at San Siro, having initially sought a transfer after being told by Solskjaer that he would no longer be a first-team regular in Manchester.
“I never thought the opportunity would come to play abroad but when it did I spoke to Ole [Gunnar Solskjær] and he said I wouldn’t have many chances at United so I went and spoke to [Antonio Conte], who had wanted me when he was at Chelsea," he said.
"Once he said I could play week in, week out rather than be a bit-part player, it was always a go. It definitely worked out. Milan is an unbelievable city to play in and live. I wanted to try to learn the culture and the language and play as much as possible and that’s what I was able to do. Winning the league was the perfect way to top everything off.
'I’m just delighted that on the last day of the season we were able to celebrate with the fans outside the stadium. Now I’m delighted to be back in England at a club I know really well.”

I do agree with you! Ole Solskjaer is to be blamed! By playing players out of their traditional known position to please its idolised young inexperienced players.

truth be told. the reason why man United allowed Lukaku to leave it's because he used to disappear in games sometimes. and as for me I remembered him failed to score in about 11 games and not only once but twice in two season. so now tell me which coach would keep a striker who doesn't score in 11 games when you're contending for trophies 🤔🤷 tell me Ashely young who No sense you think English premier league is a league of old and slow defenders like serie A where Lukaku can run and pass them like corns. we shall see

call me superstitious bt MU shouldn't hv bought Lukaku in the first place.... look, he as been fantastic wearing a blue shirt all his life... that should tell us his destiny to play for a team like Chelsea, Everton, Anthorbug, Inter Millan etc not Man U... a team recognize with red he played fine in Man U but nothing compared to when his in a blue shirt, no matter the club

That one decision by Solskjaer left a permanent doubt on his coaching credentials that only Marshall can justify. Anthony Marshal owes Ole vindication.

In a front 3, anybody can play at anywhere, that’s why it’s an attack formation, you clearly don’t have any idea about football formation or how it works, Diamond formation is basically a defensive formation, that’s why all our players struggled under JM, they where all complaining, even we the fans where complaining, so what’re you talking about? Cavanni is a point strikers also, a pure no9 but he sometimes come from the side, Lukaku don’t want that, MU fans don’t want defensive football, so also he choose to go to a club that suits him, clubs like Chelsea and inter, that’s why he left, nobody push him out, just don’t say things out of your own imagination, not all players can perform, even Messi can’t perform in a Diamond formation, so just don’t talk bec you like Lukaku, say fact man.
You didn't answer my question tho, would Lukaku like to play at wing? can he ever adapt to that? It's not like I like Lukaku, Ole himself said that he never regret that Lukaku left, he rather have Martial, Rahsy, and Greenwood as his main player.

And if you're Lukaku himself would you like to play at wing??? Can you adapt to that? Like being push to the wing???

In what article the Ole said that? ole change the info to a front 3, Lukaku only perform as point striker which is a Diamond formation, in Ole formation he has to something come from the side, so he suddenly feel like he was being push to the wing, he didn’t want to adapt, so he left, MU tried to keep him, they tried to stop him, he left when we had no striker in the team, Martial, Rashy where wingers, Greenwood was still too young also, Lukaku left MU when they needed him the most, not the other way around.

Nahhh you're wrong tho, Lukaku never wanted to leave Man Utd, it's Ole who didn't want him coz according to Ole he's not 'suits' to his philosophy. If only Lukaku got the chance to play with Bruno x Pogba behind him!

its a lie. Ole never liked him.. he wanted Martial, Rashy and Greenwood to be our front three... and the treatment metered to him and Paul Pobga actually made him feel not loved.. The fans never bashed Rashy but had problem Big Rome's first touch
You’re wrong, Lukaku can only perform as a point striker, when ole came in he change the info to an attacking formation, so either Lukaku play as a wild striker or play in an info of 3 point attack instead of a Diamond formation, he didn’t want to adapt, he taught he was being push to the wing, then he immediately wanted to leave and started feeling unwanted, he wanted to leave no the other way around

MU didn’t want to sell him, he wanted to leave, MU tried to keep him but you can’t keep a player who has already left, it’s not MU fault, I would still sell him any time any day, I still don’t like how he plays football anyway.

Lukaku played in a very weak Man U team. He did not get the support he needed but he scored 42 goals in two seasons. How many EPL strikers scored 42 goals in two seasons during Lukaku's time at MU or after he left ?
he was one of the weak players
