Ademola Lookman scored the only goal as Atletico Madrid scraped to a 1-0 victory over Girona at the Estadio Metropolitano, in what was Antoine Griezmann's final home match.
Match Report
While Diego Simeone's side were already assured of Champions League qualification, Sunday's defeat left Girona in the drop zone, two points from safety ahead of their final match of the season.
Bryan Gil nearly gave Girona a dream start after five minutes, sending a swerving strike from range narrowly past the left-hand post, before following up with an off-target header six minutes later.
David Hancko struck the bar with a header seconds before Lookman broke the deadlock in the following passage, tapping home from close-range of Griezmann's low cross.
Jan Oblak was on hand to deny a number of chances from a desperate but determined Girona side, including powerful strikes from Viktor Tsygankov and Azzedine Ounahi.
Alex Baena and Griezmann twice combined as Atletico pressed to double their advantage, only for Paulo Gazzaniga to stand firm with a string of saves.
Girona continued to search for a leveller to move them marginally closer to safety, with Cristhian Stuani blazing over the bar deep in stoppage time off Claudio Echeverri's centre.
It was not to be, in the end, for the Blanquivermells, who will need nothing short of a miracle ahead of their final clash of the season with Elche, with as many as seven sides in LaLiga facing the threat of relegation.
Data Debrief: Valiant Girona left empty-handed
Girona will certainly feel they deserved more from this clash, having produced a brave display to try and climb out of the drop zone.
In total, Michel's side produced 2.14 expected goals (xG) from 25 shots, 11 of which were on target. Atletico, meanwhile, managed 1.94 xG of their own from their four shots on target (17 total), but were helped by a clinical bit of work from Griezmann and Lookman.
The Frenchman received a big ovation from the home crowd, having played his final match at the Metropolitano ahead of his move to MLS side Orlando City SC this summer.
In total, he has scored 74 goals in 165 appearances for Atletico at the Metropolitano across competitions, at least 32 more than any other player for the club at this venue (Angel Correa, 42).
