Aubameyang: Going from Barcelona to Chelsea was a huge mistake

PIERRE-EMERICK AUBAMEYANG thinks his move to Chelsea was a ‘f*****g big mistake.’

Aubameyang, 36, now plays for Marseille in Ligue 1, and has found his feet again in France with four goals and two assists in 10 games, leading the line alongside former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

However, he still has regrets over his 2022 move to Stamford Bridge.

He said on his move to the Blues: “That was a big mistake going there. It was a f*****g big mistake.

“At that time I had a bad moment in Barcelona. I had a home break-in and Barca needed to sell a player – me or Memphis Depay – and the only thing that was on the table was Chelsea.

“So I said ok, for my family, I will move away, even if it’s Chelsea…

“I was thinking maybe it will be okay, Olivier Giroud went from Arsenal to Chelsea and he had no problems, but for me it was different.”

Chelsea fans, interestingly enough, seemed to take his side in the comments section, after the podcast clip went viral on social media.

One replied: “I don’t even blame him, Potter was playing Havertz over him every week, who was stinking it up.”

While another added: “As a Chelsea fan, he’s not wrong, you can’t blame him for saying it.”

Aubameyang is regarded by most as Arsenal’s best striker since the days of Thierry Henry.

Despite his only silverware at the Emirates being an FA Cup win over the Blues in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the forward scored 68 league goals in 128 games for the Gunners, forming a memorable partnership with Alexandre Lacazette.

The French-born striker captained Arsenal too, finishing as the Premier League’s joint Golden Boot winner in the 18/19 campaign.

Things turned sour with Aubameyang and Mikel Arteta however, in the lead-up to his departure, with the now 36-year-old being left out of Arsenal’s matchday squad to face Tottenham in the North London Derby, with the Spanish boss citing disciplinary reasons.

This happened again for a game against Southampton before Arteta stripped the striker of the captaincy three days later, and then the Gunners announced his departure on the 1st February 2022, with his contract terminated by mutual consent.

Immediately after leaving North London, Aubameyang moved to Barcelona, where he rediscovered his scoring form, with 11 goals in 18 games, including a brace in El Clasico.
